Hi

I am looking at moving soon, and need to sort my car insurance now. As I don't know the postcode I will be moving to yet, I am just wondering if I can expect a uniform change no matter which co I go with now? or do different insurance companies apply different rates? e.g I am almost certain my car will no longer be garaged at the new address and it is likely to be more expensive.

Thanks

I used to work for an insurance company and the system they used to give out quotes was programmed with each individual post code and the rate associated with it.

I also just moved house to a street literally 2 away from my old one and my insurance went up as a result :(. It must be based on previous claims as there isn't anything different between them that I can see.

Thanks- so just to clarify I mean that will all insurance companies treat the difference in price between AB1 and CD2 the same? or will some apply a 5% difference, others 10%, etc

It's all based on past risk experience on the part of the insurance company. For example if Company X has had 4 claims for theft in the last year from Postcode A their prices will be higher than that of Company Y who've had no claims from that postcode.

Basically, they'll all be different.

Well that sucks, my estate is actually quite nice, not had any crime since being built 6/7 years ago. Yet still in group E :<

I was supprised to find that when I moved from my rented place to the new gaff that my insurance went up! I tried to argue it with them but they were not having any of it.

My arguement was...

I now live on a no through road, where drive by shootings and boy racers dont thrash up and down. Why is it now more expensive?

Car insurance! Stupid! Just stupid!

That would be wrong then going by what happened with me. The postcodes are the same rating, yet my insurance went up.

Few month's back I as told by my current insurance that they re-accessed their magic numbers and would not be insuring my motorbike unless I get it garaged... So a quick trip to another insurer and lo behold, I got insurance and cheaper then previous as well.
