I'm not so annoyed with the respawning, but what I dislike about the checkpoints is firstly that there's absolutely no "factioning" in the game, so you're going to get shot at regardless, and how their jeeps are super-powered when they drive them, so even if you power through full-speed in a buggy, which is definitely faster than a jeep when you're in them, they still catch you up.
thats truly doing my head in, its just crappy poor quality game lengthening tactics.
Story is fairly poor, reputation system is ridiculous, from the guys posts to the criticism I think a rep system based on which faction you are helping and targetting one faction over another gets you specific weapons available to one faction only would be the way to go. Making reputation based on buddy missions, which are overly long and always ridiculous, is stupidity in itself as, buddys go, so how is your rep with one buddy causing higher rep with factions, and everyone else in the game, makes no sense at all, especially when you're fighting both factions.
Its reminding me of stalker except its even more repeaty and boring so far. The faction system in stalker was there, for the sake of being able to say they had a faction/rep/whatever you want to call it system like other games have, they don't advertise it means, and does nothing but thats not the point.
THe problem is, at no point in the game do I care about stopping the Jackal, you don't actually come across the "innocent" people you'd be helping by stopping the war, just two horrible factions of people I'm quite happy to leave to kill each other. How can the factions work in the same town, wtf, they have entire armys but a little chicken wire with a sign saying no guns makes them safe. Except in those times the town is under massive attack for no reason which results in no change.
Nothing in the game makes sense, there really isn't a story and frankly theres not a reason, start to-a long way in, to play the game in terms of story.
Fantastic(but buggy) engine, I mean it looks superb, gives a huge world and with a great story is easily good enough to be the basis of a fantastic game. But it fails on basically every other level so far. I think games like this end up seeming worse than they are due to the huge potential you can see behind it that was completely passed by.
