Crucial Ballistix just failed :(

what auto voltage gives is dependent on what the motherboard and BIOS makers program it to give... but generally I would have thought it would be 1.8, but who knows at a high FSB, maybe maybe a higher voltage is programmed

Why can i never find any programs that show dimm voltage???

i had 2x1GB Ballistix pc6400 kit that died, they rma'ed and gave me some 667 stuff by mistake, i tried that and it failed too within 2 days of install. All at stock volts and mhz...

changed to some cheap geil stuff, that ran fine, switched to some 2x2gb OCZ PC8500 stuff and its been running finr @ 1000mhz for like 6-8months no issues whatsoever.

Putting them to 1.8 or 1.9v won't make a huge difference - it will probably make them last a bit longer - but seen plenty of D9GMH and D9GCT chips die even with that low voltage - and using a fan on them won't make much odds either (unless your trying to get a little bit longer doing suicide shots at 2.5+v).

Please just don't buy or reccomend crucial ballistix...

@ majorppd - I found the legacy USB bug out first hand (read my post per chance?). I think its a BIOS bug combined with memtest - seems to be an ASUS issue. I havent tried 'downgrading' or upgrading to a different BIOS to test - tbh, i ruled out the RAM for the stability issues i was having.

Legacy USB support is only really needed for using USB keyboards in bootloaders (eg the GRUB bootloader that comes with linux, or the windows bootloader) - i have yet to have had a problem having turned it off. I would leave memtest for a good while - it should give you a good idea if the RAM is knackered. If no errors are there, id leave it... i did!

Im on my second ballistix tracer now and getting memory dumps every few hours,so no more for me.
Im gonna get some corsair xms2 for my asus maximus formula.
Shame they look nice in my windowed case.
Anyone got any suggestions for ram for maximus formula:)

Im now on Bios 1202 and still memtest chucks up errors if legacy USB is on.

But if i disable it then it works like a charm.

Just had email stating thay have my old ram now waiting for new ones.

Then stick them in and hopefully im sorted.

Cheers so far guys wish me luck...... lol

the Crucial Ballistix are the worse memory out. i had 4gb 1066 which i was running them at 2.0v fine and after about 4 months they failed. but i couldn't be bothered the rma them so i just bought some ocz 2x 2gb 1066 sticks.

I'm starting to doubt the stability of my Ballistix Tracers too. I had a problem with them not long ago which I thought I'd fixed by bumping the NB voltage by 0.1v (it was the difference between freezing in Memtest and being able to pass) yet I have had a few occasional CTDs lately in Far Cry 2 and L4D Demo.

Ran Memtest again last night with no changes and it passed 1 run with no errors, then got 12 errors in one test on the next run. I ran it again this morning with legacy USB turned off to see if it made any difference and I had 2 passes without errors. I really don't know at the moment what to do, as it's not erroring consistently and as extreme as I have seen before (my previous set of Crucial memory ended up with thousands of errors on the first run).

Is disabling Legacy USB a "safe" fix for Crucial memory on ASUS boards? Why is it even a factor in memory stability?

Im not sure it should be - i dont have Crucial memory - im using corsair, but got the same results with some G.Skill RAM i bought cos i thought the corsair stuff was ruined. I managed to eliminate the memory in my stability issues - it tunrs out the apps i was was running were just very cpu intensive, and a lot more picky about errors than prime. I have a feeling its just a BIOS bug, and its unfortunate that it collides with memtest. However, if you have a second (non ASUS) board, i wouldnt hesitate to recommend you test on that. Unfortunately, i dont... so i've stuck with the stuff ive got, and having reduced the overclock, i have not had any stability issues (other than a corsair PSU dying...!).

Every single person I know that has had ballistix or anniversary ram has had at least one set die on them
Unlucky for them, mine are still going strong!

They been run at 1.8/1.9vDimm for nearly two years, excellent memory rated at 333MHz and running at 533MHz!

Add me to the list for Crucial fail, I've just found out these 2 sticks I have here have died. RMA time then I'm gonna eBay them... just not worth the hassle

Let's see now... I've had...

3 sets of crucial 10th anniversary ram die on me, though I still have a 4th set that's still running but they'd probably die if I so much as looked at them so I'm keeping that computer case shut (father's PC).

2 sets of crucial ballistix ram die on me including the ones today. They were the RMA replacements for the above 10th anniversary ones.

Never once ran any of the sticks at above 2.2v.

I'm never buying Crucial again. These OCZ sticks I have in my main rig have been rock solid so far... (touch wood)

Well the RMA service is excellent, my replacement RAM is already on it's way. In the same timeframe, I haven't even had as much as an acknowledgment email from OCZ from my RMA request submitted at the same time
