Things that annoy you when driving!

People who start braking for a turning BEFORE they indicate.

doesnt that depend on where it is?
think about it, if i wanted to take the second road on the left, but the first is fairly close, if i indicated before i started braking then i would have to brake quite harshly to make the turn, at least you will know that i am slowing down for something, and then the indicator coming on shows why i am slowing down.
or the other alternative is to indicate before the first road on my left, but then you might think i was going to turn in the first road

also if your not up someones arse end then it shouldnt matter that they brake first

something that anoys me is lack of indicating, or wrong indicating, roundabouts more commonly people indicate (sometimes) to turn right, but then dont indicate to leave the roundabout leaving the right indicator on, this to me shows they are continuing round

By that comment, I assume you hate HGV drivers? - Alas, were restricted to 40MPH on single carriageway roads.... :( ;)

You're a HGV driver?

Why, why, WHY do you idiots insist on pulling out of each other's slipstream to overtake on motorways, discover that without the tow you're both limited to the exact same speed, and then proceed to pace each other side by side for the next 5 miles whilst a huge mass of cars gets caught up behind you? Why?

This is by far my number 1 pet peeve when it comes to driving. There are long stretches of highway in Holland where HGVs are confined to the nearside lane only, leaving two lanes for real cars, and it's brilliant. We need that rule over here.

The clue is in my sig I suppose....

Because, in the U.K. us "idiots" have just as much right to use the highway as you do sir! - You like Holland so much? fine, go live there! :p

We overtake for the same reason as every other road user, to get past the guy in front. If he decides to be an arse and not lift off a tad to allow the faster (usually lighter loaded) vehicle pass then thats hardly our problem! - I do conceed it is an issue for some drivers that forget that its not a race......

Also, we have tight delivery "windows" to aim for, if we miss these "windows" then our load gets refused, causing problems for both employer and their customer who's goods we are trying to deliver.

Very few trucks are limited to the exact same speed, due to a number of issues such as limiter calibration, tyre wear, gearing & engine output, also, we have hills over here, the Dutch don't.

Excepting HGV drivers then. ;)

Not on multiple junctions just a normal junction it seems to be brake(manoeuvre) signal then look in the mirror. Should have worded my original post better. :(

I never drive to close to the car in front and always leave enough time to stop but good driving shouldn't leave other motorists guessing what the next move should be.

Surely the same logic applies to the lorry behind which is able to do 0.5mph faster? Why can't he lift off ever so slightly and wait until the road is a bit less busy? 0.5-1mph slower isn't going to make much difference to arrival time.

I can understand why you'd overtake another lorry doing 5-10mph slower but it's all to often that two lorries are side by side for 5 miles+ doing the exact same speed. Occasionally you see the lorry in the inside lane gaining a bit more speed and the lorry in the middle lane has to pull back in.

This behaviour is completely idiotic and a sully on the name of the professional and courteous drivers who avoid it. In Northern Ireland, the main backbone of the country, the M1 is a dual carraigeway for it's entire length (apart from a new bit between Balmoral and Belfast). Frequently, the entire motorway is reduced to 55mph for miles because of lorries overtaking. It's a royal pain in the ass.

I'm well aware that not all lorry drivers do this and it's probably a select few who give the rest of you a bad name, so I'm not having a go at you in particular.

On dual carriageways in the UK, "we" should be only doing 50MPH, giving an extra 6MPH (from the limited speed) to get past as & when required. Alas, many HGV drivers ignore this & go everywhere @ 56MPH which makes the problem worse.

Sadly, "professional and courteous" don't sit well together with what seems to be an increasing majority of HGV drivers. :(

Yes because that's a sensible solution to this particular problem.

We overtake for the same reason as every other road user, to get past the guy in front.

But too much of the time it's not overtaking at all, it's just side-by-side driving which is clearly against the highway code. And I seriously doubt getting stuck behind a truck that's 0.1mph slower is going to cause you to miss delivery deadlines.

Tailgaters really annoy me, had a brand new Audi following me the other day and the bloke driving was so close i sware i could see what was written on his shirt!

Horses on road really annoy me too, they crap all over the place then it just gets left there!

People smoking while driving is another one, they say phones are bad. Smoking behind the wheel must be even more distracting as you have the light the damn thing first as well as concentrate on the ash!

stop sitting on the fast lane all day then. there 2 lanes for a reason, slow cars stay as left as possible.

Don't talk soft, you honestly think HGV drivers enjoy driving side by side? we don't!

As already said, its due to the overtaking vehicle not planning his move correctly, or, the overtaken vehicle not lifting off a tad to allow the other to pass.

Driving an HGV is all about maintaining speed & monentum, you don't want to be behind a slower vehicle plain & simple - this problem is only made worse when the slower vehicle encounters a hill.

Again, as already said, a lot of it is simply due to impossible delivery schedules set by traffic "planners" who could not organise a **** up in a brewery and drivers trying in vain to meet these stupid deadlines, a problem made worse by distribution centres that'll either refuse an entire load, or , make the driver wait hours in a "sin bin" for merely being anything from 5 minutes to an hour late, usually through no fault of the driver at all.

Remember, without trucks, you'd have nothing in your house or in your supermarket, we merely deliver what consumers buy, no matter what the product.

Germans seem to get on fine, trucks are banned from the autobahn during the day there. If we introduced that as law here it would also reduce our motorway fatality rate, since most deaths involve HGVs. Also fewer prostitutes would be murdered.

I should be transport minister!

Germany is just a tad bigger than the UK with a lot better road network than we have over here.

The UK logistics industry can barely cope running 24/7 never mind night time only, and thats before you consider the opposite setup we have over here - night time lorry bans in a lot of areas (I know, I drive at night in my truck and they cause me no end of grief)

People who speed up when you over take and the people that drive down a country with no road markings down the centre!

Aero

Stopping for petrol when it's cold and people who can't see that I am very important and therefore they should simply MOVE! Oh, and people who try to overtake me, I always learn them good by accelerating....or flashing them.

Near work there's a dual carriageway with a 40mph speed limit. The inside lane is closed due to road works and the lane closure signs are at least 200m ahead. Yet people still speed down the closed lane right till the cones block the lane and push in the que . I make it my duty not to let them in. The signs told you 200m ago to move over ffs!!

Try looking up Merge in Turn - would you rather the extra road space was just wasted?
