Currently bored at the worst fireworks display I've ever seen! :( So just had a quickie look at a certain etailer for a few things and stumbled apon.....

....A Powercolor ATI HD4650 512mb for a rather cheap ?45!

If you've got an htpc or game at under 1600+ res this is one awesome choice! Its basically an underclocked 4670 so you could easly bump the core up to 750MHz+ and get more performance than the 'no so old' 2900xt!!!!!! Damn technology moves so quickly

Back to freezing my a$* off..

That`s cos it`s 2 days late, yer just seeing the duds that didn`t go off on the 5th! :D

Mmm, I`ve often toyed with getting a cheap 4xxx series card to cf, at that price, I may ;)

For 90 quid you proberbly could get a 4850 if you looked around and thats almost double the performance of a 2900XT.

Double the performance yes, but double the price

yea, but it even it out, and overclock that 4850 and it'll proberbly faster than 2 2900XT's so its even more than double which means its better bang for buck

4650 is for people mega strapped for cash tbh.

Fireworks are good all year round but only if your holding the matches/homemade plunger... :D

Its just a waste of cash getting a 4850 over this, if used at low res there's sweet FA difference when playing the latest games.
It wasn't so long ago you'd get slated for using a 8800gtx at low res, technology has changed but the games haven't.

Erm the 4670 is slightly worse than the 2900XT

It is? Since when was the 2900xt that good? All the reviews I have seen puts the 4670 the same as a 3870 and 9600GT both of which match a 2900xt in every game with some winning slightly.

I think somehow most people can afford 95 quid for a GPU if they are into gaming tbh...

Nah. My mate still has a 7900GT cause at most he can afford £50 to upgrade his card which there hasn't really been anything yet to warrant a good enough gain to do so (games at 1280 x 1024).

He has a one year kid and wife to support to computer spending comes last.

From what i had seen it sandwiched nicely between the 3850 and the 3870. We can look at those cards as the 2900Pro and 2900Xt respectivley.

256mb card will strugle even at lower res 512mb is needed for most recent games i would get a 9600gt sli setup before that

It'd do just fine at up to at least 1440x900 without AA. Above that, you're right. But then again my 8800GT 512MB was perfectly usable for gaming at 2560x1600, so by pixel count, I'd expect the 256MB card to do comparably at up to about 1600x1200 (about 1/2 the pixels).

You will get bad stutter when you up the texture detail most games theses days are console ports and are written with 512mb in mind

The 8800gt has gone upto ?60 now but I dont think the 256mb will be too much hindrance at low res either... a very good choice!

Your both right!
The RV730 chip has a 128bit memory interface and half the number of ROPs over the R600/RV670, and to a degree this cripples the performance at high resolutions. If you look at any chart at 1920*1200 you'll see even the 3850 out perform it.
However.... It has twice the texture mapping units and a much more efficient design so at lower resolutions (where the output renderers and memory interface have less impact) the 46xx pulls ahead! Not to mention the massive improvement in AA performance
