Have just swapped out an amd opteron 146 for a dual core 3800+ toledo core
e6 revision bought brand new some time ago.cpu is running stock at moment in a nf4 lanparty expert board with muskin redline ddr 400 at 400mhz.cpu vid set to 1.35v idles at 24-26 both cores using artic 64 pro cooler.pvm at 33c,
chipset at 44c.Have targan 480w psu + 8800gt + 3 x hdd's.
Running xp home sp3, but still using original 1.2.2.0 cpu driver that was installed with opti 146, which was o/c to 2500mhz completly stable.
Now getting random lockups and won't last couple of minutes occpt 30mins test cpu+ram. Was hoping to o/c to around 2500mhz or higher.
Any clues to instability ?
Got rid of norton antivirus and replaced with avg 8 free and zonealarm free only other differences from original setup.
Windows recognized cpu straight away so no need to repair install, haven't update bios as thought not needed to as cpu recognized.
Have power meter from ******s right now showing 155watts power draw while
typing this, psu set to 1 rail via switch rated to 30amps single or 2 x 20amps on 12v split.

You will probably find its the cpu driver at fault at the moment you have the single core driver loaded and not the dual core version.
Firstly try installing the newer driver version from AMD if still getting lock ups you may have to do a system file reinstall
With that at least all your progs and files will remain intact.

Stop being silly.

Don't use this rubbish bloatware.

Update to latest bios.

Have your data always on a seperate partition to OS.

Reinstall Windows.Get some good Antivirus

And your good to go.

Update, pc only bought 2006 july.
installed driver cpu 1.3.2.0
oem cpu bought last oct £30 new misco.
smartguardian reports cpu 1.31v - 1.35v set in bios
+12v =11.83v-11.77v
ldt bus =1.28v
nb+1.5v= 1.53v
atx +5v = 4.99v
atx+3.3v = 3.34v
dram = 2.62v
vbat = 3.05v

cpu core temps idle 25-26c pvm 32c chipset 43c

could it still be weak psu targan 480w u15 modular 2 12v rails at 20amps 0r 30amps combined .
3 hdds + sound card xfi gamer + 512 8800gt + dvd 4 case fans 3 x120 + 1 x 80
cpu artic cooler freezer 64 pro ram muskin redline 2gig ddr 400 at 400 were at 500 when
had opti 146 at 2500mhz. all same setup and was rock solid.
only difference now cpu and got rid of norton av.
just get random lockups and cannot run orthos 2004 for more than 1min without error
at stock with x 2 3800+ cpu faulty ? or not enough volts ?

I think he's had it longer than that.

<kicks self for missing that, lol

nope as an above comment pointed out there's a lot of bullpoop written above psu / power req's. assuming that the psu is not faulty ( let's face it you could have a 1000w psu but if it's shafted it's no use ) then it's not the root of your problems

Next update, have noticed when bios set to auto vid cpu at 1.3v locks up after only few mins, but when set manually to vid of 1.35v locks up after 5 - 10 mins.
cpu rated vid 1.30 - 1.35 stock.
is it worth trying more volts ? Or chip faulty ?
Not overheating running at 41c under 100% stress both cores.

Worth trying a few more volts to see. From memory I had my 4200+ x2 up to 1.5v under water to get it to 3Ghz stable. Plus as cpu reported, 1.35 in bios is only giving your cpu 1.31v in windows and it might need the full 1.35v to be stable which will probably need 1.4v in bios.

So long as the temps are okay you should be fine.

Have you checked your memory with memtest? I know its the same memory before the cpu upgrade but it may just have gone borked at the same time and you wouldn't think of checking that for ages.

Why would memory be at fault ? under clocked by 100mhz was running at 500mhz
on a 250 fsb. same volts. have mem test built into bios so can try.
