For 9k.. Seat vs VW...

Hiya,

I've got a budget of between 7-9k and I'm looking for something as reliable as my previous VW's.

I've been told that Seat is the same as VW but cheaper? Is this true?

I know that a seat Leon is effectively the same as a Golf, but what is an Altea like?

Is there a list of which Seat's are like which VW's?

With this budget what would people recommend? I'm looking for something as new as possible with a Diesel engine and as low Mileage as I can find.

I'm willing to me persuaded to get something non-german if people are convincing enough :)

/edit forgot to mention. It must be a 5-door cause we have to put the car seat in the back.

A3 TDI S-Line DSGs are in this budget too. In fact, a fair whack after a quick browse on PH.

Thats where my money would be going over a VW/Seat alternative. Even better in Quattro form :cool: ditch the derv idea unless really warranted.

Sorry to be a noob but what is DSG? and PH? and "derv"?

no worries, DSG is a direct shift gearbox. basically a gearbox with full automatic mode or semi-manual control. assosiated with the VAG group so you'll see it on all the SEATs, VWs and Audis etc.

PH is pistonheads, a website dedicated to car ethusiasts.

'derv' is slang for Diesel, something looked down upon on here :p :D

I'm happy to be convinced that diesel is a bad idea, ut I always thought they were cheaper to run? Is this no longer the case?

There seem to be some nice cars on autoquake.com, also that piston heads site has some nice ones listes :) I would absolutely love an A3, but assumed they were out of budget. Are they expensive to run?

As a comparison the following can be had for 9k:

For Mondeo Hatch
56 plate Titanium x (top of the range with leather, cruise control, climate etc)
2.2 Turbo Diesel

Also, why do you want low milage? Would you rather have a 2 year old car that has done a total of 10k miles as a run about to/from school and round town, or one with 40k miles that has sat on the motorway and seen little wear/tear? Bear in mind the latter will also be cheaper.

As for the low mileage, I guess there is no way to tell what's done 40k or to/from school and round town OR 40k of motorway.

I've not had to but a car for over 6 years and my last one (VW Golf TDI with 136k) still ran fine and didn't cost me much to maintain every year.

There is far too much choice about for me to make a decision without a few suggestions :) Hence the thread really.

As I say I'm more than willing to consider alternative family cars :)

He wants a 5 door to put a child seat in the back. You won't get a Sportback at this budget, well not a low mileage one (which is one of his requirements). Agree with you though that an A3 would otherwise have beenma better choice than a VW/Seat.

For £7k, he'd probably be better off looking at A4 saloon/estates with the 2.0Tdi engine.

Wouldn't touch a Mondeo 2.2TDCi at this price - it's residuals will fall faster than a brick off a cliff and the 2.2 engine is even more stressed than the other TDCi engines which means even more likelihood of injector/pump problems.

Simple answer - SEAT build quality isn't as good as VW. I'd go for an Audi, as someone has said, you can get a nice A3 for that money.

Depends on the price you pay for it. For example i got a derv mondeo with 45k on the clock and its mint for 4k. Now if i was to pay the normal price which was about 6k i would have went petrol.
 
In answer to the mileage question... about 15k/year.

Currently considering a 55 plate A3 SE TDI (in sky blue) for £8,500 with 20k on the clock.

:)
