Right I'm 19 first off so whatever car I get needs to insurance group 8 at an absolute max. I currently drive a W reg Punto mk2. Nice car but it's only 60bhp and has no extras. Current value about £1250 as its one owner, low mileage and FSH.

I'm going to get a brand new car for the 09 plate change. Max I'll pay is £11K and that needs to include all extars I want and everything. Has to be a 5dr and has to be new.

I want a warm hatch. I've had a look round and I personally think the Grande Punto is brilliant value for money, I can get the Tjet (120bhp, petrol) with everything I want for £10,008 or the Mjet (130bhp, diesel) for £10,900ish, both with the extras I want (Black, factory fitted sub, window tints and 2 tone alloys.

Click (Tjet)
Click (Mjet)

Both are reasonablly quick car's (8.9 and 9.4 sec 0-62's) considering my current car is 14.5 seconds. Plus they both remap pretty well.

Tjet will go to about 150bhp and Mjet close to 190. Means 0-62 times of just about 8 seconds for both.

I still have a few months to decide and the current Mjet (1.9) is not in production anymore and will be replaced by a 1.6 model that'll get the same bhp by the time I come round to buying.

Both cars are insurance group 6 which is brilliant and not massive amounts to tax.

Are there any better cars for this kinda money that are what I want;

  • 0-62mph time of less than 9 seconds
  • 5dr
  • brand new
  • less than £11k
  • good sped (air con, mp3 radio etc)

I have also considered a Tjet Bravo (150bhp) which will cost about £11750.

Thought I would ask on here as I've looked at other companies and Fiat really seem to have the best specced engines.

Cheers

Unless you are stupidly rich buying a new car on finance at 19 is one of the dumbest things you can do.

11k can get you some serious, serious metal nowerdays

Troll?

I am very good with money, by the time it comes round to ordering (January) I will have £11k in cash saved, plus enough for insurance and to live on etc.

Surely it'd be better to use it as a house deposit and spend less on a car? By buying a new car you are throwing away thousands and thousands of pounds.

I am currently a uni student so do not need a house. My placement year starts next September so I want something better than a 9 year old car to get me too and from work.

I looked at getting pre reg or second hand 2 year old examples but the savings on Broadspeed means it's far better value to buy new and get what I want.

Second Hand Tjet on AT

Only £1k difference and I'm getting exactly what I want.

I do not want a 3dr car and I do want it in black. I can get a brand new Tjet with no extras for £9400 so it's only £400 difference looking at it that way.

Is there something about your placement year that requires an almost new Fiat Punto as a car? You can get much better cars for that money...

No, nothing specific to a Fiat Punto, hence why I'm asking here. I've asked on Fiat forums and thus I'm going to get people telling me to buy Fiat. If I come here hopefully I'll get a mode wider view of good cars.

I have owned a Fiat for the last 2 years and like my current Punto.

It does however need to be exactly what I want, hence why I'm only really considering new.

I won't buy a car because it isn't the right color or if it's only 3dr for example.

Plus the savings you can get on these online websites means for me it's a much better idea to buy new and customise the car.

What other cars are better value for money or what would you susgest?

Buy a MonW330d220ST

330d is gonna be too much on insurance, plus I'm only 19 so would look silly. Insurance on a 220ST would be too high as well (I'm guessing your talking about the Mondeo's? Which i do really like btw)

An 05 ST220 could probably be had for about £8500 if you hunt. Spend the rest of the money on the extra insurance and you have a much better car than a punto...

As much as I would love a Mondeo (and I really would I love them to my gf's amazement) I don't feel it's a car for a 19 year old. Plus considering it's the hot version I'd image it'll have had a good 3 years of someone raping it.

I've found one HERE but insurace group 16 means I'd never get a realistic quote. Running costs are also going to be crazy for someone working PT to cover.

The good thing with the Fiat GP i was looking at is with only a 1.4 engine, tax isn't that much, and being a small car things like tyres and replacement parts arn't going to cost a bomb.

£400 a year on tax, plus 25mpg means it's not a suitable car for me.

Plus it's an old shape car, with spending a massive amount of money for a 19 year old I would like to have at least the latest shape. Something like THIS seems better value.

Why are you buying a brand new car if you're concerned about the cost of running a car in the first place?

I'm 19 and also a student (and maybe going on placement next year), however I would not buy an £11k brand new punto. If I wanted to max out my savings I could do the same, but to me it seems like a waste of money. Much better cars can be had for less money on the used market. For instance, I'm thinking of changing to an MX-5 or E36 cab in the new year, restricting myself to £4k.

Also the idea of £11k on the car, and restricting yourself to group 8 insurance seems absurd.

No mate, the fact your 19 makes you think your very good at most things.... ;):D:D

Your not that good with money, potentially, your throwing thousands away on depreciation....

Women, beer, drugs & holidays are a lot better value for money. ;)

You have plenty for a decent motor, without a large debt around your neck imo.

Welcome to the forums, watch out for the furry one. ;)

Once the outlay has been placed I can enjoy a number of years of hopefully trouble free motoring. If in 5 years time financially I'm not in such a good situation £400 tax and the same on a new set of tyres is going to hit me hard, less we forget petrol.

I want something to be realiable, thus why I am restricting myself to a new or nearly new car. I don't want something crazy or super fast, I want it to have 5 doors for praticallity so things like an MX5 although a very nice car are not something I would even consider.

I do not drink and have not for nearly 12 months and can say I will not start any time soon. I do not smoke nor have I ever used drugs so none of those appeal to me.

Please everyone do be my guest and susgest some cars (AT or PH) and I will seriously consider them.

Thank you everyone for the welcome btw.

If you're in financial trouble in 5 years time, it'll be because you bought a brand-new Punto.

So you're going to buy a new car, then remap it voiding the warranty? Also you do realise your car will no longer be insurance group 8 after you remap it. Buying a new car is never really a good idea monetary wise (especially a FIAT), never mind with the state the economy is in at the moment.
