Do you ever go to a gig just for the support?

ive done it a few times tbh, the support being a great band i love and the main headliner being meh to me. no shame in doing it imo.

Years ago during my student days in cardiff, my mates once convinced me to go with them to see Sum 41 because they had a spare ticket. When I got there I found out that the Mighty Mighty Bosstones were the support act and it made my night.

PK!

of course its quite alright in any normal situation to JUST go and see the support.... but in your situation, its Kings Of leon.. possibly one of the best bands of the past decade! so no.. you WILL stay and you WILL like it :P:P hehe

I've been to plenty of local gigs just to see the support acts, I'd stay to watch the healiners but the majority of the time they were crap!
(this was when Lincoln's punk/ska scene was in its hayday I might add)

I've never gone to a 'big' gig just for the support, but have been to a few where the support acts were surprisingly good and at times better than the headliners (one which springs to mind was The Aquabats gig with The Riverclub supporting, The Riverclub were really tight and the highlight of the night, The Aquabats weren't at their best but still put on a great show though)

Went to see Keane last year in Reading, it was standing only and my feet were killing me!..

We saw the two support bands, one was a strange one man thing from Canada, the other were called 'Captain'.. on hearing them I wanted their album and promptly the next day ordered it from t'interweb!... only stayed for 4 of Keane's songs and went home!... but don't see it as a waste cos Captain were ace!!.

Went to see Bloc Party once, mainly because Biffy Clyro were supporting them. Though I like Bloc Party anyway and they turned out a better live set than I expected so it was win-win.

Went to see Weezer with Biffy Clyro supporting - it was meant to be the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but they pulled out as their singer had throat issues. It was thoroughly obvious it was a last minute callout as they were absolutely awful. :( Shame as it's the only time i've seen them and really do enjoy their music.

I've done it a few times, never left before the headliner though, although I probably would if it was someone I'd seen before AND didnt like

Went to a Monsters of Rock at Donington some years ago. Headliners were Whitesnake. Second billing went to Aerosmith. And they had Jimmy Page guesting for a couple of numbers :/

Satriani was crap? How comes? Too cheesy? Too cerebral? Wrong crowd?

Firstly his music is not to my tastes. I find his music increasingly cheesy with every year I grow older.

Cerebral? Hmm, if you are implying his playing is 'too clever' to the detriment of his songs then perhaps.

The crowd was sooo boring. Oh man. But it wasn't their fault, Satriani played for 2 hours, which dragged. He played mind numbing songs from his mind numbing latest album. The only real highlight was 'Time Machine'.

He also just isn't cool. Steve Vai and Joe Satriani are not cool. Far too nerdy.

Gilbert is different because of his attitude. Its a bit sad he has gone to making instrumental albums.... but fear not he is bringing out a new vocal album out in the next few months :D

I remeber years ago my brother offered me a free ticket to see celion dion, but I turned it down. Then the next day finding that mike and the mechanics were supporting :(

In the 70s it was all about support bands.

Queen supporting Mott the Hoople
Hustler supporting Queen
Silverhead supporting Nazareth
Snafu supporting Status Quo
Van Halen supporting Black Sabbath
Alex Harvey supporting Uriah Heep
Iron Maiden supporting Judas Priest
Motorhead supporting Hawkwind

the list goes on and on
