Seemingly a ridiculous question BUT what would you guys buy for around £20k?

Has to be sporty, 3 door , fairly small - fairly reasonable insurance so no S2000's! Can be more fun than practical and needs to be reliable (so would want to avoid ancient tvr's and the like)!

I know it's a vague question but just want to see what people suggest. :)

Does it have to be new or are you willing to go used aswell? Would possibly suggest a pair of Grande Punto's. Or maybe more seriously along the lines of an Asbo ST, Megane 230, Golf R32....

Can be new or used. Are hot hatches really the best way way to go?

Fox- I KNEW you would turn up and say that as I was creating the thread! :p I even considered putting "no bmw's" in the title to keep you out!

I'm not asking for what you suggest- just something sporty for around 20k... (which isn't hugely expensive & I haven't mentioned if it should be cheap to run- apart from trying to stick to less than say group 18 insurance)

if you can afford £20k for a car then insurance shouldn't be a problem. The price of anything sporty has plummeted so there's some amazing deals to be had which more than offsets the running/insurance costs.

I'm loving the credit crunch :D

20k is hugely expensive to me!!
Why dont you spend 12-13k and get a Mk5 GTI?

^ Quite.

Credit crunch has it's advantages depending on your situation but it appears sometimes to be celebrated by people who are on the wrong end of it but just don't realise it.

Client last week was raving at how much he was getting a nearly new Bentley Cont. for but seemed to forget he was getting about 4 pence for his Range Rover in part ex. ****.

I'll be honest and say - I really despise them :o

I like the look of a civic type-r (I know that's blasphemy saying that on here) and the new audi tt (but they're generally a fair bit over £20k.

A Z4 coupe seems crazy cheap all things considered but put off by the ugly front and the fact it is a bmw.

e46 M3

Although it doesnt conform to all of your requirements, this is due to the inherent conflictions within, therefore we can just shout cars that are worth twenty thousand pounds at you. :p

Its the odd way of thinking 'I've got £20k to spend then insure what I buy, so i'm going to spend 20k!'

Just buy something cheaper then use the rest for running and insurance.

A good M3 at about £15k leaves plenty for running, insurance and some towards fuel :D

The £20k figure was excluding insurance costs- all i'm saying is that I don't want to be paying greater than say ~10% of the cars cost in insurance!

I don't like bmw's as they have (in my opinion) a "thug" reptutation and I do not particularly like the new "flame" styling of them.
