Well, ive gone and done it - sold my sony 40w2000 Lcd and now im ready for something a bit better;)

So, whos got one? any opinions on the set? im pretty sure i cant get anything better for the money but i am still quite worried about image retention, after seeing the boss's 50" LG plasma. anybody got anything reassuring to tell me? :p
 
Is your boss's a current LG? They produce a fantastic image, but they do have some issues with retention.

If you are worried then simply run it with low contrast and brightness for the first 200 hours and you'll be fine. The Panny is an excellent set.
 
It's the one thing that puts me off Plasmas, as I use my with a HTPC. I do believe it is not as bad an issue as it used to be. I even once had it on my LCD when I paused live TV on the snooker one day!!! The ones at work that were on Sky News for some time have the logo and ticker burnt into the screen.

My current Pani is an LCD and has very good blacks, so don't let this put you off. :)

it is yeah, the 50pg3000. i was very impressed with it even out of the box - very little needed adjusting. but i did notice a little retention pretty much straight away but i have heard LG are worse than others for this. I just dont want to be spending £1k on a tv to have to put up with IR:)

I've had the TH-50PZ70B since last December and woken up on many a morning with a static DVD menu still on screen after 6 to 8 hrs. No sign of any screen burn at all.
 
ok ive been looking some more and im leaning towards the 80b rather than the 81. i dont need freesat, a card reader or picture in picture. the frame creation would be nice to play with but i know i wouldnt leave it switched on. £200 cheaper.....no brainer?
 
Umm I don't actually believe LCD can suffer from IR. The technology is fundamentally different.

Be careful not to confuse image retention with burn-in. They are different things.

Provided you keep the brightness/contrast below half way for the first 100-200 hours and keep the picture mode OFF dynamic (cinema is good) you should drastically reduce the chance of having burn-in on your screen in the future.

the 80B is the one to go for, IFC is ******** anyway and you still get the 24P playback.

a grand for a 50" plasma which is only 2nd to the Kuro's is amazing value.

I was always a skeptic when it came to frame creation but then I saw two Panasonics side-by-side showing the same source, one with IFC and one without and the IFC one did look pretty damned good actually. I have heard some people saying it screws up on certain material tho but more than that I know not :)
 
the motion didn't look very natural to me when i saw it, i don't know how to describe it but i wasn't a fan.

maybe i didn't see it with a working source.
 
When watching football the IFC is hilarious to watch, it can't predict movement in curved planes so it completely spaz's out when you get a goal kick etc. :)

Bluray looks amazing! :)

I was so impressed that i sold my sammy LCD and replaced that with a Panny TH42PZ80 42" aswell!

One word of caution though, SD on the 50" is not as good as the 42". On the 42" it looks not far from a CRT but on the 50" its not as good but still more than watchable and not really a problem unless your within a few feet of the screen.
After some research i found that SD is much better on a 720p screen than a 1080p screen.

And oh ye, both screens handle 24p beautifully :)
 
Just out of curiosity, how much did you sell your 40w2000 for? Looking to sell my 40" Samsung LCD and they are fairly the same on spec and price.
 
I have had image retention on my PX80. I am running a HTPC through it and after leaving leaving the desktop on for a number of hours I had retention. It went after a few days. Nowt to worry about, it's unlikely new models will suffer from screen burn.
