right, got an 8800 ultra and dead space. im used to getting the nvddlmkm driver crashes now and again but playing dead space i cant get past the opening movie without it crashing!!!!
do nvidia hire quadraplegic monkeys to code drivers for them? i could eat aphabetty spaghetti and crap out a better driver than they manage to.

question 1 how do i fix it
and number 2, what graphics card can i get to replace this ultra? want as top of the line as i can afford for less than £300
are ati drivers nearly as bad? and it also needs linux support

thanks

1. not sure

2.GTX280

edit: jus looked at the prices and its rediculously priced, if i was you i wouldnt upgrade unless you dont mind being ripped off. wait until prices come down imo, remember it was 250 until this silly credit crunch i know so little about.

Well I've got myself a Powercolor 1Gb 4870 and with the exception of Far Cry 2 (which doesn't like ATI Overdrive for some reason) haven't had a problem. Oblivion, Crysis, Fallout 3, Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 look and play great at maximum settings. At some point I'll be getting myself another one and run them in Crossfire. Very pleased so far.

I don't really think there is a fix for your problem i think most people say its random and as you said yourself it seems random apart from this game. I would get the 4870 1gb as it could well be a problem with nv and your current pc setup or maybe even the card. Choices are 4870 1gb, gtx260 maxcore or if you could find one for under 300 a gtx280 which is the fastest of the 3. The 4870 1gb or gtx260 216 maxcore will both impress you also coming from an ultra. If you want to spend more the fastest card on the planet is the 4870x2 but i can't see you getting one for 300.

There is new cards rumoured to be here for christmas but with the credit crunch guessing at prices is not really accurate atm. The new cards may bring prices down a little but i would not be holding my breath if the pound keeps falling against the dollar.

Your not using an Asus P5 series board are you?

9/10 the nvddlmkm error is due to an unstable overclock, northbridge instability i.e. getting too warm or duff memory.

I have the exact samw problem with Dead Space and 8800Ultras in SLI. Tried loads of driver, gonna try the 175.16s tomorrow to see if they fix it.

It's bloody annoying in it:(

I have a XFX 780i and still get it in dead Space and other games. I think it might be later drivers not liking the 8800 Ultra, I will see tomorrow when I try the 175s.

just wached a vid showing benchmark results of the 4870 x2 v the 6 280 and the ati won hands down

depends if you can be botherd with all the issues that come with it.

unstable, heat etc.

imo the gtx280 is a better buy.

dont flame me people, its just what i read:p

nForce (ironically) and Asus P5 boards don't seem to like nVidia GPU drivers much...

Why would you put nForce drivers with an Intel chipset? If you mean Geforce (GPU) then I have tried varying combinations and several different P5 boards, S775X, P35, and P45 and never encountered a problem.

so the ati 4870 is unstable? do you get these driver errors with the gtx 280

A 4870 isn't unstable, just some people are adamant that ATi's cards are unstable, while their beloved GeFarce cards are perfect and have zero issues. In reality, you're just as likely to have problems with both NV and ATi, the only reason ATi may seem more common is because they've been outselling NV quite a bit in the recent months, so there's a lot more people with a 4 series than a GTX200 series.

Dead Space runs fine on my PC, I've got 2 4850s in crossfire. :)

Well i have to buck the trend with my Pk5 and overclocked ultra (see sig) , Dead space is fine , nice and stable runs smooth on both the older 178's and 180's betas this is under Vista 64bit as well , for all you vista haters out there
