How on earth did the the authorities let this happen?

Horrific. He was seen SIXTY times apparently by social workers who should have 12 ongoing cases at a time. 20 was the more typical case number for this authority.

I did not like hearing about it on the news. My lad is a pretty similar age, its pretty upsetting to reflect on what the baby suffered.

How on earth can social workers, health professionals and polive visit a child 60 times in 8 months and not notice evidence of abuse to the child? That is shocking, how people can be so incompetent, I have no idea. And how a parent could do that to their child is beyond me. There are some truly evil evil people in the world.

I know, you think of your own children thinking "How could they do that to someone so small and defenseless". My youngest son is about the same age, with the same hair... My wife was pretty upset by it.

I say, let their names out, and let the general public deal with them!

Why? The general public are a bunch of Big Brother watching morons.

"Oh look, I'm offended by some answerphone messages left for Andrew Sachs, boohoo, look at me".

Not to mention the Sun Newspaper (read by 10 million people in Britain) seeming to think that everyone who looks at a child in the street is a paedophille.

**** the general public. The real issue with these type of cases is that the social workers don't have any powers anymore. Laws mean, as mentioned above, they can't handle the children, etc.

This case is an extreme example of what happens when things go wrong mixed with incompetance, but generally, the whole thing needs to be looked at.

Care workers need more control, simple as that.

I dont think you need to worry about that, the guys in prison dont really tolerate stuff like this so as soon as they are discovered.... well who knows

Exactly, I'm not a fan of Vigilantism, but they deserve everything they get and more.

We have a truly warped legal system in some respects where you seem to do more time for "white collar" crime than violent offences against vulnerable people.

Some of the things I've read today have been truly heartbreaking, the child screaming for his daddy when handed back to the mum after a visit, trying to crack a smile for the health visitor days before his death and having to scavenge dropped biscuits for food.

Some people on Facebook have managed to scrounge the woman in charges email address and are calling for people to politely email requesting she resigns, hope she takes the hint.

Oh no, the guys in prison. Beacons of morality. Nevermind the fact that they got there by raping someone.

Oh, but even they're allowed to take offence at a case like this.

Result.

I didn't say anything about a moral pyramid. Kiddy fiddlers and killers just dont last in prisons.

Dont troll this thread, please!

Lol. How am I trolling. How is this worse than the usual responses which include:

1) Bring back the Death Penalty
2) Vigilante justice
3) They're gonna get raped in prison

Saying that killers & paedo's don't last in prison is a lie. Who's got the guts to intimidate a murderer in prison?

Plus, people are split up and serious, psychotic offenders usually get put in expensive, exlcusive maximum security prisons, not run-of-the-mill jails for car thieves.

As the father of 2 young girls....I have to skip the pages in the newspapers covering this atrocity....How anyone could do such horrific things to a child who is defenceless and is totally dependant on adults is beyond me. It brings tears to me eyes just thinking about what abuse and misery that poor boy went through.

I have no sympathy for anyone who does things like this to children...they should be hanged/executed. They are not fit to be humans and should be put down like other dangerous animals.

I hope the little boy now finds peace, something of which he was robbed in his very short life.

Utterly grim, there is a sub class of people who exist in our society who appear to be void of any kind of humanity.

Horrible mistakes were made by the authorities, but you can guarantee they will be made again. No social worker should have to deal with a case this bad, and until we start to tackle the root causes of these child bearing sub-humans we will get nowhere.

I've heard a lot of bad things about social services from people who foster. Sadly, it doesn't surprise me that this sort of thing happens from time to time.

One of the doctors who examined this child is the son of a mate at work.

My mate's son told him the child seemed almost souless. He clung to him right through the examination and would not let go. It brought the doc to tears. There were two doctors that examined this child and they recommended that it not be returned to the parents...the social workers decided it should. The next day or 2 the infant died.

How can people do this? I just cant understand what would possess you to hurt a baby!

I always found it really odd before I had jake, but with my little boy i understand it even less. I am truely amazed at the way some people treat their children. I adore my boy, he's my big ball of sunshine (even on his bad days). to even think about hurting him on purpose just would never cross my mind :/

People make mistakes. If an overworked, underpaid social worker makes a mistake - even as grievous as this one, do they really need to lose their livelihood? How would you coax people into the role with that hanging over their heads?

I accept your point. Granted people make mistakes and staff are overworked and underpaid, but given the list of injuries, while internal injuries are not visible to naked eye, missing external injuries (albeit covered in chocolate) is beyond belief.
There's clearly a systemic failure somewhere and that's were my convictions were aimed towards. You only have to look back to the Victoria Climbie inquiry report (which is online to read) - paragraph 1.42 - Accountability, and also paragraph 6.564 in relation to Haringey.
