I'm looking for some insipration on some recipes for a more low carb diet.

I'm currently eating about 4k calories with a 250/420/115g ratio of protein/carbs/fats.

I want to stay at around this calorie intake (maybe even a couple of hundred more if possible) as I'm trying to add mass, but at the minute I'm struggling to work out a high calorie diet without as many carbs.

Main thing I'm having trouble replacing is a low carb/high cal protein shake. I usually have; 30g whey, 50g oats, a banana and some milk. Tastes good but it's full of carbs.

Anyone got some basic low carb recipes either for a shake or any other meal? Oh and must be cheap as well, I could easily make up a diet eating 10 chicken breasts a day but my wallet couldn't handle it!

Cheers

I use double cream, couple of scoops of choc whey, spoon of natural peanut butter and top it off with some water for my low carb shakes

myprotein.co.uk do a Total Milk and Whey which only has 1.1g of carbs per 30g scoop. Take it twice a day as I am on the ketogenic diet. Have lost a stone in 5 weeks. :)

what other sort of meals do you have? Ive just started the anabolic diet and at the min pretty much everything is meat and veg or meat and eggs wouldnt mind spicing it up a bit

Well you can't really, that's the nature of the diet really!

The ketogenic is a zero carb diet from Sun-Fri then Saturday you go the opposite way and eat around 2500 cals of carbs, pasta, porridge etc and try and keep the fat content down. Sounds a bit strange but works a treat.

There are some recipes here.

I did think that but its always good to see if anyone else has found any good recipes plus I cant really complain about waking up to a load of meat and egg every morning, although I am looking forward to this weekends first carb up

I prefer to balance protein at a higher ratio to carbs personally... though getting over 200g per day is pretty damned good going without shakes! :)

edit: sorry, I saw you were using shakes!

The only way of reducing carbs and upping protein intake is unfortunately to spend more money - that's where whey comes into it's own as it's a cheap good source of protein.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I realise I may have to shell out a bit more as that's the problem with carbs really, they're cheap and in everything! If I lose some of the carb based parts of meals I may be able to make up some new meals without having to spend too much more hopefully.

Could some kind soul post up a few of their favourite meals which have little or no carbs as that would be a good way for me to start experimenting!

Cheers

I just make up my extra protein through snacking on nuts, cottage cheese, oily fish, yoghurt, and lots of meat! I still take in some decent carbs, but I'm protein biased.

@richard:
Yea I will be having an omlette of some kind. I currently have 3 poached eggs on some bread but I want to do away with the bread and 3 poached eggs by itself is a little boring so I will experiment with eggs. My last attempt was 3 eggs, some grated cheese and some random bits of onion I found in the cupboard. Needs a bit of work lol!

@Freefaller:
Yea I do have a few snacks. At present I usually have one or two of the following; brazil nuts, cashew nuts, cottage cheese and rice cakes, yoghurt, fruit.

Trouble is I don't really like the taste of any of the above so I don't eat as much of it as I'd like. I'd rather introduce a proper meal rather than a number of snacks, even if it meant cutting down from 6 to 5 meals a day (keeping the same cals etc though)

Well in that case, pre-cook some food the night before with a decent marinade or make some mince beef/lamb or chargrill some chichen or something like that en masse, and then portion it throughout the week day? I make a kg or two of mince then freeze it, and take around 300g of the stuff to work along with sandwiches, shakes and other bits of food I have so I constantly have something to munch on. Fortunately I have my own office so I can get away with eating whenever I want without looking like some sort of freak :p

You have to pre-plan and prepare. I love all foods, so for me I guess I'm lucky as I can just eat what I want and know it's going to be good for me. If you do make sandwiches etc... use pitta breads or some decent high quality wholegrain bread, none of this plastic bread that seems to be around, but ensure the fillings are thicker than the bread - all the bread's there for is to stop your fingers getting dirty! :p

Yea I do have to do some bulk cooking at the weekends. I used to do enough rice and chicken for the week but now I've got rid of the rice so I'm just left with a freezer full of chicken! It's more of a problem finding a simple cheap meal to make from it atm!

Avoid the yoghurts, full of sugar, will stop your body entering ketosis therefore stopping your gains. Nuts are a great source of fat and protein.

You've made yoghurts sound scary? Are they really that bad for you in terms limiting your gains?! I generally have one with a sandwich as a snack.

Depends on the type and weather your low carbing or not but if the rest of your diet is good I cant see one yoghurt making the slightest difference

Yoghurts are the enemy, look here under bad points. It's pure sugar basically. Depends on which type of yoghurt really, some are worse than others.

Depends what kind of diet you are on. If you aren't on a strict one then the protein and good sugars are perfect. But if you are on a zero carb then they are no good.

I've been making things with couscous recently, had forgotten how much I liked it! Handful of couscous, tin of tuna and some sweetcorn/kidney beans with a dash of tabasco, tasty :D

Couscous is a good food, nutritious and filling. Try this, fry onion, garlic and pepper with curry paste. Add couscous and water till its at its right cookedness. Serve with sausages or chicken. Made 3 lots of this for my lunch was sick of it by the 3rd day lol!!

Cous cous is lovely but he needs recipes for a low carb diet, and unfortunately cous cous is full of carbs. :( Wish it wasn't though.
