January Transfer Window Thread - rumours and signings here

Minus the transfer fee of replacing him, I can't see how keeping Pires would have been cheap as he was on high wages.

Carrick has played over a hundred games in two seasons - thats not really "injury prone-ness" by any means

Not only that but Carrick is back now

Man Utd need a bit of muscle and drive in the centre of midfield without doubt

He's a good player but I doubt Barca would have the appetite to sell, us to have the money or him the inclination to come to the sub tropical climes of Manchester. Not to mention a midfield 3 for us would be pretty unbalanced attacking wise. I think this is more than likeley some creative jouranalism and some pie in the sky from the agent.

Rather than get Xavi, I would prefer to see the continued development of Nain and Anderson at the expense of a big name coming in. If the money is there, then they should get Tevez signed up

Only 18 months left on his contract, hence the price.

Anyway, Torres to leave Liverpool because of the credit crunch. Cannot see it happening to be honest but would be interesting. Apparently the debt used to buy the club has doubled in the last 12-months, not very promising times for the Anfield outfit.

United need a powerhouse central midfielder.
They need to find a Keane or Vieira, they have enough pretty ball playing and ball carrying midfielders, they need someone who wil put the boot in and lay down the law, I said this in the summer.
They also need a third proven quality centerback.
I said this in the summer also.

And they need to drop Berbatov, he is a joke.

Do these kind of players exist anymore though?

I'd say Messi is dangerous from 30 yards. There's where he operates.

He's unlikely to stick it in the top corner from there but he's fairly likely to craft a chance somewhere.

Exactly.

Messi is probably the most dangerous player in the world from 30 yards (but not shooting, as already mentioned). How many times do you see Ronaldo go past 3/4 players then take a shot? Hardly ever. Messi? Almost every game.

Just because you keep saying it doesn't make it any more correct ;)

Joking aside, you touch on a point that I agree with but from a different angle. Firstly I don't think we need a player who can put the boot in. One of the finest defensive midfielders to ply his trade (Makelele) was never one for putting the boot in. Injuries happen and I would hate for us to spend £x Million pounds on a defensive midfielder when he is not needed. Playing DM isn't all about sticking the boot in and breaking up play. The very best DM's know what space to mark or run into to stop the opposition playing. So you can be just as effective without touching the ball. I think we would be better waiting for next season to see the extent of Hargreaves recovery or otherwise. For my money he is a player simmilar to Makelele who is intelligent and knows what and where to go in the DM role so why waste money on someone like Xavi who will take a good 6-12 months to settle in and Hargreaves could already be back in the side by then. Going off Saturdays performance, I would take a fully fit Hargreaves over Carrick any day of the week.

However the issue of leadership at United is correct and we need a settled captain in the side. Rio 1 week, Gaz Nev for the next 2 then Giggsy midweek is not a settled team in my opinion.

1 league goal in 9 games does.

He only has 27 more games to score the rest of his 30 league goals he is supposed to be getting this season.
Hell, if he even manages one in two (which is the best he has ever done) he is only on for 16.
Plus, he is really adding to the team, so far we have put in some of the most inept attacking performances ever seen at the club, and against anyone who is half decent its gone from "when" we score to "if".

He is our Shevchenko.

Tevez isn't setting the world on fire when he plays either. He has less goals in all competitions (same as Berbatov in the league) and has less assists.

Rooney only has 3 league goals and 5 in all comps (same as Berbatov), and Berbatov has the most assists in the Man U squad.

Seriously some of your rants are on Nickg proportions. You did see football under Atkinson right ??? And where has this 30 goals come from :s

Fergie has come out and said that he will give Rooney & Berbatov a run together then he will do the same with Tevez & Berbatov. 10 out of 16 premier leagues says Fergie gets it right more often than not.

more atpx **** lol

if Hargreaves was fit I think we would have won against Arsenal and not conceded half as many against Hull (ok so half of three doesnt go but you get the gist)

Carrick is great, and still more than worthy of his place but a completely different type of player. Anderson is another great player, but not quite what we are missing at the moment

Evans while not totally up to speed - I think is good enough cover for Rio or Vidic (even though admittedly they have both been shaky of late) no reason at all to get another player for that position

Exactley, whats the point in having in having a top youth set up if your not going to give your youth players the chance. Evans is more than good enough to be good cover for Vida or Rio
