Unleaded - Cheap stuff or pay that bit extra?

i usually fill up with tesco 99 ron, it's 99.9/litre atm, and tbh, that's only becuase i'm not sure i should be running 95 ron in it, 2.0T A3. otherwise i'd save myself 5p / litre lol

No its should be run on 98ron fuel for best performance.

The 325 always had regular unleaded in it after I tried V-Power once and saw zero improvement.

Oh and to duke, its a big engine (2.5l), and has probably done many MANY more miles than yours.
Wow you looked inside the engine to see if it was any cleaner? :p

There probably isn't any difference on BHP without a remap for 97/99ron, I use it for the cleaning stuff really :) I don't do huge miles so the difference in cost is tiny at the end of the year.

I used to use regular (Shell) when I was using the car for commuting.

Now that it's just a toy and sees some hard driving pretty much every time I take it out, I always use V-Power... just for the cleaning/extra protection against det. Especially with the current prices, it makes even more sense to use the good stuff.

It's taken a good few weeks and several hunderd litres before I noticed a difference, but the car does seem to be running a little better so I'll keep using it :)

You're not going to see a difference after just one tank.

I tend to put in Shell VPower or BP Ultimate where possible or at worst, Tesco 97, mainly as the engine is quite big (2.5l) and done a few miles. Not worth using a 1.2l engine or something (which is what Which? magazine did recently and surprisinly found no real difference).

Hehe. big engine=2.5litre:p

Surely big starts at atleast 3.0 or even 4.0litre

I tried both V power and normal unleaded in my old Octavia vRS (same engine as your car) as has my dad in his 2.0T A3 and there is no noticable difference.

The filler cap states it should be ran on either 95 or 98 ron fuel and will do so perfectly on both.

I have tried Vpower in my 3.2 A3 and again no noticable difference. I just run standard unleaded in it now.

in my current car a 1.6 focus, i have found the cheap petrol found in TOTAL garages etc to be shocking, £10 gets me 40 miles if lucky. the same amount of fuel from Shell gets me 70 ish, so i conclude pay that bit more...

Assuming 95p a litre you get 17mpg on Total fuel and 30mpg on Shell fuel?

From a 1.6 Focus?

Seriously you HAVE to be the latest comedy windup poster. First you want to spend £1k a month on a hire car now you think we'll beleive that you get near twice the fuel economy just by swapping brand?

Are you for real?

I tried super unleaded for a month in my car (1999 VW Golf 2.3l V5) and although I got slightly better mpg, it still cost more, so I just use regular unleaded.

I get awful MPG so I just tend to use the cheapest stuff I can get (usually from morrisons, the car's converted to LPG anyway but has to start on petrol).
Expensive stuff won't really benefit me as it's an old engine, albeit a 4L :(

Normally stick Tesco super in the Ed30

The manual confirms it can take super or normal (with a power drop) but I stick with super on the basis that I've got to hand the car back after 6 months, and knowing the loan scheme terms, they'd somehow work out if I'd been using normal and charge me for it.

My car runs a lot smoother with the V Power stuff, quieter too, and it's noticeable. I remember reading once that it's to do with the knock level or something, something to do with piston alignment.

I pay more for V Power but get slightly more miles and a smoother ride so it makes no difference price-wise, except I get a smooth ride bonus.

People do disagree though, same as some people disagree with buying expensive speaker cable over the cheap stuff. If you notice a difference, and you think it’s worth it, then it’s a good buy.

What cars that in Shoot1st?

It's a Honda Accord :D

You're surely going to tell me that it's all a load of ******** with the car I have, and that it's all in my mind, I know, I've heard it all before, but you won't change my mind. :)

Another thing the V Power stuff does is cure the infamous judder that Accords sometimes have when setting off in first gear, that's probably all in my feet though ;)

I found no difference between Esso, Sainsburys and Shell normal unleaded but Vpower gives around 20 more miles per tank though given the extra cost it's actually no different to normal unleaded if you were to cost it up the same though Vpower is said to clean the engine over several fillups so this would probably be a thing to do every now and then.

I also found virtually no difference in economy having the AC turned on all the time after some folks here recommended leaving it on all the time to let the climate control do what it's supposed to properly :p

Mine feels a little better with V-Power compared to normal or supermarket brands. Placebo or not, I only get through about a tank a month so it doesn't really cost any more and is convenient as Shell is only the down the road.

My car isn't mapped to make use of the higher RON so I don't generally put it in. I will however use it for a couple of cycles here and there to make use of the cleaning additives it has. :)
