Call of Duty: World at War

I don't think I'll be pre-ordering games again, unless there's a collectors edition that I'm after as supermarkets only seem to stock the vanilla versions of games.

I'm wondering what game shops are going to do to be able to compete, with the way it's going they've not got a hope in hell.

I was lucky to get mine yesterday , i think the in game graphics are better on COD 4 , i am finding COD5 a touch harder on single player and multi , i am also finding COD5 the levels are very cramped and not much room to hide , COD4 found the levels more open and you could find a nice hiding place with a sniper riffle :)

Prepare for some linear "corridor" action. It's nowhere near as open as CoD 4, and that was pretty linear any way. You're more or less forced down "corridors", even when you're in a big field. I'm less impressed as I get further into it, but it might surprise me.

Early impressions are good, looks nice. Smooth. Only problems are of my own making. Hitting A to run and RB to reload has me chucking a grenade. Had a bit of a problem seeing who was an enemy as well. I kept hitting my own team :)

Grenades on Vet are still a bitch and it checkpointed me with 5 around me, so each reload it had me trying to find a path away from them.

At the very least the enemies run out and don't keep spawning so far. You can hide in the grass and let your team kill them all. It seems as long as you have moved up to a point close enough to the enemy they won't continue to respawn. If you hide right at the back of the firefight out of harms way, they re-spawn.

Do you not think it's really cliched and repetitive? And also, everything is just a rehash of things that have been done in previous CoD/MoH games? I'm struggling to see why, other than to make a quick buck, they've released this.

Stop hiding soldier and get into the fight :p:D , as long as it looks as good or slightly better than cod4 (ps3) and the gameplay is like cod4 then i will be happy .

The same is true though then of COD4 it's just a re-hash of something else. I haven't really got far enough to see if it's repetitive. The sound though is still crap.

Woohoo my copy has arrived. :D

Think il try and run through single player on hardened first.

Go Vet TBH, some of it is incredibly easy compared to 4. You can do levels pretty much just by pushing your team forward. I'm on the 3rd level and there's a huge building you have to take. I ran up the r/h side of the building without going inside which triggered my men to think I had gone inside. They then pushed up as immortals despite being out numbered about 50-1 and took the building while I admired the brick work on the building.

Clearing buildings so far is half as hard as 4 or 2 on vet. You get plenty of time to shoot them. Loads more checkpoints too.

No doubt I will get stuck and frustrated soon though. :D

That sounds a little better. One thing I HATE about COD is the re-spawning enemies.

Its done pretty much perfectly for me. Stops you hanging back but means you have a huge gun fight that you can actually win. You can kill a few men by a sandbag implacement and more take the place. Yet it's only like there are 20 or so men to kill then they run out. Picking them off with the Garrand is a piece of pee as well. Its like using the M16 with red dot sight.

I just wanted to do on hardened quickly so I can get it out of the way and concentrate on multiplayer. A bit sad really. :p

It seems hardened and veteran share the same achievements anyway?

Yep. But I don't see how this is a good thing. You can literally run through some of the levels without even killing anyone. Then you get stuck on a daft hard bit where people are shooting you from all angles.

Having received my copy this morning, and spending a few hours playing it, I thought I would (as most gamers do) post my opinions on it. Btw, this is the PS3 version.

Let’s start with graphics:

A mixed bag so far, at times they seem to be on par with those found in 4, but at other times they seem to have more in common with those found in 2 and 3, some of the textures appear very low res and as such look very out of place, others go for the Serious Sam approach and have a grainy appearance over them, as if it boost realism.

The character models are as good as 4, and have very nice textures, uniforms look suitably battered and faces look pretty good.

The fire looks, well, a but pants if I’m honest – there’s always plenty of it going off, and for such a prominent item, it could have done with a little more work on the looks; to make it a bit more realistic.

The game features dismemberment, now I’m not a psycho, but it is a welcome addition to the game – lobbing a ‘nade often results in bodies and legs parting company, and letting loose the shotgun at close range also has similar affects – one time I took someone’s arm of and they staggered around dazed.

Sound:

The musical score is a bit intrusive and at least one piece played during a raid, seemed a bit out of place for the setting – rather than using a nice orchestral piece, it stuck me as being more rock like – a bit of a miss to me.

Weapons sound a bit too gutless, you get used to how the weapons from this era apparently sounded, and as such, those found in 5 just seem a bit lower quality, as if this were a mod made on a budget, but are not totally worthless – just ‘different’.

Battles sound as manic as ever, with nice explosion effects and distant sounds of war.

Gameplay:

Same old really, I didn’t expect anything different, but I have had a couple of occasions where an enemy jumped on me, only for my view to end up getting stuck in the level, with no way to reload the last checkpoint – requiring that I restart the entire level (I may have been able to quit and reload, but didn’t try that as I wasn’t too far from the start).

Another problem is that the maps are very sticky – what I mean by that is you often get stuck on invisible objects, which in the heat of battle, prevents you from legging it, resulting in death and a few choice cuss words.

There are real problems with the hit detection at times, I have had perfectly lined up headshots, with no obstacles in my way, only for Mr Enemy to get away without a scratch; case one was a sniper in a tree, I took shots at him with a US rifle, a scoped Jap rifle, and he was finally felled by a few rounds of shotgun!

Now, a BIG problem – even with auto aim/aim assist (whatever it’s called) off, the game still thinks you require assistance and will often happily move your sights onto someone else, just as you are lining up a nice distance shot. Memory fails me at this point, as I seem to recall CoD 4 also did this, and I ****ing hate it!

Value?

People will, no matter what, draw comparisons between this and Call of Duty 4. Personally I don’t mind the WW2 setting; I prefer using the bolt action rifles than an M16 (just more pleasing when you land a hit I guess), it is also a good setting for some massive scale battle carnage, which is always good fun for a bit of game-based excitement :D

Does it match number 4 though? Hmmmm, I think I’ll have to finish it before I can say, but so far it just seems to be more of CoD 3 – something that feels not as polished as an Infinity Ward release, but more like a fan made mod or short expansion. I’m not one for jumping on this “bash Treyarch wagon”, but of the two developers I think they are certainly the least skilled.

Worth £40? Not what I’ve seen so far, but I’m only on the third campaign at the moment (of how many?), so may change my opinion on that soon, I’ve also got Coop to play; the main reason for getting the game – but I would imagine it will go the way of Army of Two; me and a mate finish it then trade it in.

Anyway, that’s my feedback so far folks, feel free to agree or disagree, we’re all different after all :)

Scort.

I got my ps3 copy yesterday. Is it normal for ps3 shooters to use R1 to fire instead of R2 as default? Presumably because the triggers are a bit rubbish?

Go to options and set it to Default flipped, then trigger away :D

Stuck, knew it wouldn't be long.

Vendetta, following the AI through the burning building. I kill all 4 guys looking through the window and die everytime by fire following the AI up the stairs. I right ****ing behind him. I can't run any faster as he's blocking the stairs!

I got stuck on this bit, but just before the stairs; it seemed as if you die if you deviate from a set course, if only slightly.

Try climbing the stairs the opposite side to the AI – iirc he stays left, so you go right, and then just peg it to the right at the top.
