I currently have 4GB OCZ Reaper PC8500 stuff (2x2gb). Will you see any increases in spending £95 for another 4GB? Will games use the extra ram or would be it a total waste of money?

i'm sure i saw this stuff for £50 not so long ago (not it wasn't the 6400, as that's what i use)


the difference is noticeable, but not massive..

at that price, i'd save your cash

Not really at the moment, even in 64 bit OSes, 32 bit OSes won't show any difference. I presume you have a 64 bit OS?

Anyway, even if you do, not currently worth the price.
 
Would help if you do anything with big files - eg big photos in CS4 - but not really for most (all?) games.
 
Linux and Leopard can use 8Gb of RAM without the full blown 64 bits OS. "PAE" extension (in '-server' kernel for *ubuntu) is used for that. Windows doesn't support it because they want you to pay some more :D

A big memory eater is photography; for example I manage to run out of my 8GB of memory and start swapping when stiching panoramic with a bunch of images....
 
Actually Windows does support PAE, it's just half the drivers tend to fail and you get lots of bluescreens.

And bledd, you sure you not thinking of the OCZ platinums that OcUK had for cheap for a while?

I am in a similar situation, though I currently have the corsair 6400 sticks, so an upgrade would cost me £60. Am a gamer and a n00bish clocker.

Is it worth it?
 
I'm about to build a new system and was going to go for 8Gb. But from what I've read here, I might just go for 2x2Gb and buy another paid later if I need to.
 
I just added a second 4 gigs of the Corsair kit that's on offer this week again. Running Vista 64 and think there's a bit of a boost. Could just be placebo effect though! :) Even so for less than £40 why not.
I do a bit of photography and work with 10MP raw images in photoshop so in theory it should help a bit.

no it was 8500, saw it on another forum that i can't mension
 
I don't do anything particularly heavy and moving from 4 to 8gb out of curiosity doesn't appear to have netted me anything other than potentially slightly faster level loads on the games I rarely play.

Much better ways of spending £95
