hello!
i have new custom build pc Core 2 Due E8500, Motherboard Asus P5Q-E, 4GB (4x1GB) Ram Ocz PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2.
Windows vista ultimate 64bit SP1.

so here are my questions!
-why one core is always on 3,16ghz other 2,0ghz (changing sometimes when i play crysis and COD4 ) ?
-which Voltages i have to set up on E8500 for stock speed 3,16ghz?
-what should i change in BIOS to OVERCKLOCK CPU and RAM (please tell me voltages for ram too)
i run with stock CPU FAN, so would like to achieve about ~3,6ghz-3,8Ghz!

please tell me each setting: voltage, name of setting, etc. as i am beginner on overcklocking!

THANK YOU!

It's probably the speedstep technology you can disable it in the BIOS - although I'm not sure what you mean by 'one core is always on 3,16ghz other 2,0ghz' - that's not possible.
You don't have to set any voltages to run at the stock speed - leave everything on auto.
Your RAM voltages will be stated on your packaging or on OCZ's website.

No offence mate - but it sounds like you need to do some research before beginning your overclocking.
You could do a lot worse than reading the guides on this forum and on clunk.org.

about core speed: in CPU-Z ... where the core speed shows, it is showing 3,16ghz, and changing to 2,0ghz...and again to 3,4gz,..and etc. etc.
also in AI SUIT (software which came with asus motherboard on cd) the same.as i said, yesterday i have checked about the 2nd core speed...it is going to 3,16 ghz...only when i play games...but not always...can be something wrong with CPU?
thanx

about the ram i found everything out, set it to 4-4-4-15,2.1v

You haven't read my reply properly. I have stated what causes this already. It's speedstep I think - it changes your CPU multiplier when the CPU is not busy to reduce power consumption.

Good luck with your overclock!

I have exactly the same setup (8500 + Asus P5QE)

Currently the 3.16ghz + 4gig ram and gtx280 kills any game i throw at it although im quite keen to overclock. With the risk of breaking something like the CPU would you suggest waiting until i need to overclock or is it worthwhile doing it now?

If i did manage to successfully get it up to 4ghz without breaking anything what would i be able to do on my machine that i cant do now?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

this is what it is

look for C1E in the bios
disable it if you want to
enable it if you want to save power

personally i disable until i get a stable clock - then enable it to save power after i have stability tested

personally if you are happy - i wouldnt bother

but overclocking is fun to learn
perhaps you should try it

there is a sticky on the overclocking section that should help you out

Thank you guys, i just came from university, i DISABLED C1E, now both processors run 3,16ghz- thanx for help with this

UltimateBadger- if u going to o/c your system good luck to you too,
