Just something that popped into my head today, Don't worry I won't put everything that pops into my head on here.

But this has me wondering.

You have to squeeze the trigger to release the mechanism that triggers the firing of the gun.

Would a dropped gun trigger the same mechanism?

Safety Off and loaded obviously.

I would have thought measures had be brought in to prevent it, But sometimes in films it happens, but films aren't always a reliable sauce

No, it won't happen in real life unless the hammer is already cocked and the drop triggers it (not an issue on modern handguns anyway, only really an issue on revolvers or shotguns where you've pre-cocked the hammer)

Doesn't mean dropping your gun is a good idea though.

I honestly don't know, but at a guess I would say it's possible purely because of the moving mechanical parts within a gun.

My understanding (which is limited and conceptual) is that dropping a gun which uses a traditional hammer could result in it firing as the trigger is only releasing this hammer when you pull it, the shock of the drop would do the same thing.

Can't see how it would cause a gun with a more convuluted firing mechanism to fire accidentally though.

EDIT: Oops already answered.

On an old revolver may be where you can pull the hammer back. Then if dropped it could fire.

On modern weapons no, the trigger mechs require quite a lot of force to pull them and are disigned only to operate when the trigger is operated, so a drop or knock won't cause the sear to disengage.

It would be possible on older guns though such as revolvers and the like. Still unlikely though.

And when it comes to firearms in general ignore anything you see in films or games, they are complete rubbish 90% of the time.

I just thought it was funny hearing how often the police say

"DROP YOUR WEAPON AND PUT YOUR HANDS OVER YOUR HEAD"

If the drop could fire the weapon, then would the guy dropping it then be in trouble for shooting someone, Considering he was ordered to by police :D

Yeah, It's a slow friday at work....
