I'm going to read up on and browse other forums, but I'm looking for a complete guide to overclock my system for optimum results.

Brand new build

E8500 E0
P5Q Mobo
Corsair Dom 8500 4 GB RAM
GTX260 BE

Just want to know what to bang in the bios really. I have a rough idea, but there's so much you can tweak and change.

I know mosleypup has the same setup, so maybe he could help.

Looking @ 4Ghz really for the CPU. The RAM is @ 1066 with 5-5-5-12 I think.

Also don't want my CPU Voltage high.

that's about it. Any links or advice welcome please ;)
 
you have the ram settings on the side of the dominator modules

type in what you see and run them at stock to eliminate them from the equation

try and get a ram divider that runs them as close to 1066 as you can


post what VID the chip is

[or a screenshot of cpuz&coretemp would be better]

have you got the factory bios on the board or one of the latest ones?
 
As far as I've seen, the e8400 only goes up to 3.6Ghz until more voltage and better cooling are needed. This guide might be useful to you: send me an email for the link as it links to competitors
 
try this
advanced cpu settings tab

cpu ratio setting 9.5

disable the following...

c1e support
max cpuid value limit
intel virtualization
cputm funct
execute disablebit

AI TWEAKER

ai oc tuner manual
cpu ratio 9.5
fsb freq 421
pcie freq 101
fsb strap to nb [set this to what matches your ram, normally 333]

dram freq set to match ram



VOLTAGES
CPU 1.375 [dependng on your vid, work back if this is stable by decreasing this vale until the pc doesnt prime]

cpu gtl vol ref 1/3 = 0.630
cpu gtl vol ref 0/2 = 0.630

DRAM voltage is 2.1 for corsair dominators

all the rest set them to one notch above AUTO which sets them at standard [just check what standard values are - should say in the top right corner of the bios screen]


load line calibration
cpu spread spectrum
pcie spread spectrum

all disabled

see how that goes

should give you 4GHz

having voltages on auto is bad on the p5q boards
 
dont stress - its all there

please bear in mind before trying it - i am guessing at the VID of your chip so the cpu voltage may be a bit off the mark

but the rest of the settings to get you there are in place

let me know how you get on!

should have a cool pc for that cool case of yours! ;)

googling 'e8500 p5q overclocking' should come up with some hits for you too
 
Yeah thats what I did. Just didn't like the voltages some people were using. I'd sooner have a slightly less overclock and keep the volts down.

I'll sort it, then post some test results / benchmarks and temps.

I got 3.8Ghz on 1.3V last night, but had nothing to make sure it was stable. I'm sure it will be.

Will update the bios and chipset stuff / drivers tonight. Just downloaded them, as the DVD didnt work.

no probs - im sure someone with the actual chip could be more help

but the overclocking on those boards is fairly similar for all chips

just need to adjust vcore/fsb/multi and a few other settings

you are best using minimal voltages

keep the heat down

like i say
go for the vcore i mentioned then reduce it a notch and test for stability using prime95 for 30 mins

rinse and repeat until it fails

then you find the optimum voltage :)

keep an eye on your temps using coretemp

should be fine on that cooler of yours

Cheers guys. did all this last night and everything is runnin smooth!

Ill post some pics of temps, ghz and settings soon! with some benchmarks.

4ghz @ just under 1.3 volts and @ load peak temp was 46 degrees.

Also can you use cool and quiet with an overclock?

the voltage regulation isnt very reliable on the p5q boards

mine was ok up to 3ghz on my q6600 but i needed to do voltages manually for anything more

i disable all of the other options until the clock is stable

you can enable C1E once the clock is stable if you want speedstep [powersaving feature] on
 
sweet I have EXACTLY the same setup - except my ram is 6400 ocz vista gold 5 5 5 18 (16? on ocz website)

Will try these settings tonight - but Can I still run 421 FSB with 400 mhz strap and set DRAM frequency to 800 mhz - is it bad to have the ratio higher on the CPU rather than the ram ? it wasnt stable at 842mhz - but that may be because I had the AI twister thing on stronger - still not sure what that does.
 
My Ram is fine with the 421 FSB. In CPUz it says its 6400 then under its states 8500.

I do have the corsair 8500 dominator, so i dont know where it gets 6400 from.

I could just be looking at the wrong thing.

I haven't even started to do anything to the RAM as of yet.

thanks man - I think I will put fsb strap back to auto though, as Im still really confused about how lower multipliers speed up the Northbridge
 
I'm running a E8400@4GHz at the moment still Orthos'ing at the moment (4 hrs blend stable as I type).

Have a read of www.xtremesystems.org P5Q Deluxe thread and put e8500 in as a search.

Loads of info on there which is where I got my basic settings from and then you can tweak them to fit your chip/mb.

The most importanat settings seem to be CPU Voltage (that's a given), CPU PLL Voltage, FSB Termination Voltage, DRAM Voltage, NB Voltage.

Depending which bios you use there is some overvolting if you leave the settings on Auto so it's best to set them manually if you start to overclock as you want to know what voltages you have rather than an unknown overvolt.

I'm running:

AI Overclock tuner: MANUAL
CPU Ratio Setting: 9X
FSB Strap to North Bridge: AUTO
FSB Frequency: 450
PCI-E Frequency: 101
DRAM Frequency: 1081
DRAM CLK Skew on Channel A1: AUTO

CPU Voltage: 1.4 (which gives me 1.328V in Vista under load as my chips VID is not that good for an E0)

DRAM Voltage: 2.1 (Corsair 1066MHz C5)

There will be settings and examples on the above forum thread for the E8500.

I forgot to say I'm running Ket's modified 1406 bios which replaces the memory table on the lower spec boards (P5Q, Pro, E, Deluxe) with the tables from the Premium although I think 1501 is out for some of the boards now.
