BFG Manufacturer's Warranty RMA Service... Those cheeky ****s

I just received my RMA replacement for my BFG 280 GTX OCX, as I was having artefact problems and getting BSODs in games.

I don't exactly know why at the time, but just before I sent the RMA card back I decided to remove the little plastic cover from the SPDIF port on the side of card, and as it turns out I'm glad I did.

Firstly, lo and behold, my new "replacement" also has a missing SPDIF cover.

Secondly, the shader clock on the card has been reduced by 30Mhz.

W. T. F.

Now I know some of you might think "so what, 30Mhz, big deal". Well yeah it kind of is actually. If the card was running slightly beyond capacity due to its factory overclock (i.e. they picked a poor quality card to overclock), then instead of give me a replacement they just reduce the performance so that its now running more stable but slightly under its capacity, that is absolutely disgusting behaviour, and what's more: illegal.

Why is it disgusting? Because most people don't check the clock speeds against the specs, they just look at the "280 GTX" label and as long as the label looks the same they're happy. So god knows how many other people they've done this to and gotten away with it

It's like selling a car featured with a turbo charger, the car breaks down and they fix the problem by removing the turbo and hope you don't notice.

...

I have emailled them back now, they had better reply

What is it with big corporations always trying pull fast ones on their customers?

thats utterly disgusting. be sure to go to all the forums and tell them this.

if this is normal bfg behavior then they deserve to not be in business

That's a first!
I've dealt with BFG before and they are usually amazingly good.

Hell they even gave me an upgrade on my 8800GTX when it started acting up.

That sounds more like some lazy employee really.

But do find out what's going on.

dont see how it can be a lazy employee tbh, im pretty sure it would be a lot more hard work editing the bios so the card runs at lower clocks than just tossing it in the faulty bin and sending a "new" replacement.

i wouldn't be happy if they tried to pull that one on me.

Considering the premium the XXX OMGWTF BBQ LULZ *** cards hold over the standard clocked ones, I would be quite irritated also. Make sure they give you the right one.

Totally over the top response, there is no need to do any of that. All the OP needs to do is contact BFG and get the right card sent out.

heh thanks for the response guys :)

I won't be posting this on all forums to be honest, just felt I had to vent and I did that.

To whoever's curious here's a copy of the email I sent them below:

Dear BFG Tech,

I noticed 3 things with the card you have sent me...

1) The Shader clock is now running at 30Mhz lower than before, i.e. 1428MHz now, rather than the 1458MHz it used to run at.

2) I'm pretty sure this "replacement" is actually the same card I had from the beginning, because I removed the small plastic cover from the card's SPDIF port before I sent it back, and lo and behold, my new card has a missing SPDIF cover too!

3) The card still makes the same high pitched whiney noises as before, though admittedly now I only *occasionally* see a 3D artefact, such as a single thin spike coming out of a shape, and now it only *rarely* crashes. Nevertheless it still doesn't seem perfect.

So, am I right in thinking that all the technicians did was take my card, reduce the overclock speed, re-flash the BIOS, send it back, and hope I wouldn't notice?

These cards are supposed to be factory overclocked, hence the huge price I paid. If a card is unstable as a result, then obviously it isn't good enough and shouldn't have been sold to me in the first place. If this is brought to your attention, what you DON'T do is simply reduce the overclock and hope I won't notice.

Sorry if I sound annoyed but I can't help but feel I have been deceived. If I were a less vigilant user I would have fallen for it, which makes me wonder how many other customers has this happened to who didn't notice like I did?

Can I please have an explanation and/or see a copy of the technician's report? Also I would like to be reimbursed the £8.25 postage fees I paid to return this card (I can produce the receipt if required), and also I would like for you to arrange another exchange, but this time with a real replacement that performs as advertised.

Kind regards,

Heofz

Fingers crossed ey? :p

i agree with this

Anytime i rma'ing i take a note of the cards serial number, can never be too careful.
Indeed, I registered the card with BFG as soon as I bought it, and so I have the serial number.

Only problem is, they quite obviously peeled off the serial number sticker and put a new one in its place. I tried digging my finger nail into one of the corners of it, and it looks like it could come off quite easily :o
