Five Door Volkswagen Golf 2002 (52) 1.6 S (1595) Petrol, Manual, Hatchback, Silver

22,000 genuine miles on the clock, Full service history, Cruise Control, Central locking, Airbags, Electric door mirrors, Alarm, Very good condition, One owner, Full year of tax and MOT, New front tyres, Just serviced.

The one owner is a 90 year old man who has owned it from new and decided to give up driving.

I've not seen it in the flesh yet but from the pics it looks sparkling.

£4000, down from £4500.

Going to see it tomorrow and wondered if I should snap it up if it drives ok?

I also wondered what this will be like for fuel economy? I'm coming from a 1998 1.9tdi Golf.

Thanks for any advice,

G

Sounds a bit much? Although you are paying a bit more for the "luxury" of a car that has done 3000 miles a year around town and bumped into by trolleys :) If you do buy it, I would give it a good run and down the motorway.

Seems about right looking at AutoTrader.

Why are the Golfs so dear, seems you can get a 2004/5 Focus for the same price.

The last time the engine will have warmed up would probably be 2002, on the way home from the dealer. I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole personally.

Have you seen a 90 year old drive through town?? The clutch will be shagged, gearbox knackered, it'll have never been over 3k rpm so the first time you do it the engine will think wtf and explode.

Ok that's all a bit over the top but just because it's had one elderly owner and low miles doesn't necessarily make it a good runner/buy :)

Pesonally I'd avoid and think it's too much anyway.

Although they might leave some werther's original in the glovebox.

is it normal to negotiate on the price before even seeing the thing?

bit cheeky IMO, i wouldn't be impressed.

back O/T, think i would avoid for the above reasons.

How about if I could get it got £3500? :p

I didn't negotiate over the phone, he said he would go down to 4k.

Keeping in mind I'm not looking to rag this car.

Sounds a bit expensive for what it actually is; personally wouldn't view the low miles and single owner as much of a benefit when there are newer, nicer cars out there.

I'm looking at 2002/2003 Astras and Focuses that are half that price.

Would a 38,000 mile 2005 TDI be better? (at £5,500)

(yes I have decided I will defo be getting another Golf)

the tdi is the 1.9

VW started development of that engine in 1852 and it was rejected back then by everyone for being too old and too noisy. It was left in the range for plate-whores who insist that they have to have a brand new car but couldn't afford a decent one.

I'd say that's a fair price. Although you're paying more for the mileage than anything else.

I bought exactly the same car 6 months ago, 2 years older with 60k on the clock. I paid the market valuation of £3,000 at the time. I checked the market recently and it seems to have dropped about a grand in that time! So based on that, I would try knock a bit more off.

The car is nothing special. It's slow and bulky but also tough and reliable with lots of bootspace for a small hatchback.

Argh! I defo want a VW and I've only got 6k max, but everything I find people seem to find good reason for me not to get it lol.

I'm officially stuck and the most indecisive fool ever lol

A 2004 or newer focus/astra is easy for £4k.

The golf is a nice car, but you can get so much more for your money by going for a diff manufacturer.

A car off an old person could be a good buy, it won't have been thrashed but I bet it has been whacked into curbs and driven round carparks which the clutch biting - OK a new clutch isn't the end of the world, you could change it yourself if you want just so you know its ok, the problem is - Is the gearbox knackered?

Why you getting rid of the 1.9 golf?
