Hello Everyone,

I just had to show you all this which I've shamelessly stolen from the Xtreme Systems forums.

So Interesting bits IMO are:

Deneb AM2+ Planned for Jan 08th 2009

- The 3.0Ghz release chip with be UNLOCKED :D
- The Overclocking chart seems to show 3.8Ghz ish on Air & Very High 4.5Ghz + on Water / Phase

AM3 Chips released in Feb 09

Athlon X4, eh? Sounds interesting to say the least. Not quite sure I see the target market for the Phenom X3, though. Anyway, hope these are well priced against the Intel chips!

Phenom X3 is there so that they wont have to waste a chip if a core is faulty.

Athlon X4 is a different chip, i think without any L3 Cache, just 2MB of L2.

Its interesting to see how the athlon will perform.

I know the Phenom X3 part is going to be the faulty Deneb cores, but, between that and the Athlon X4 its seems a little out of place. Oh well, cheapo quad cores ahoy!

Nice info, would be awesome for some early on prices....

Looks like ill have to put my PC build on hold till Jan at least... probably a good idea considering Core i7 so expensive anyhow.

Only thing I did not understand is will the new 940 chip be able to work in an AM3 motherboard with DDR3 ?

Good question, I don't think they will as they don't have a DDR3 memory controller, unlike the AM3 chips which have a DDR2 Memory controller as well as a DDR3 one.

Does anyone think that these can take the fight to i7? At any rate they're gonna need to be more efficient than i7, since the base i7 runs at 2.66Ghz and has already been shown to clock to 4Ghz+ on air.

Hmm this is gonna be tricky then, bit strange AMDs flagship cpu will be only DDR2 compatible and not DDR3....

In fact it makes no sense ?

the am2+ Deneb chips will work in an AM3 motherboard but only with ddr2.

same with the am3 Deneb chips will work in an AM2+ motherboard but only with ddr2.

Are you sure about that mate? I thought / presumed (maybe incorrectly) that all AM3 motherboards are going to be native DDR3 only? I can't see (maybe other than ASrock) motherboard manufactures sticking DDR2 & DDR3 ram slots on the boards?

remember the memory controller are in the cpu, so it'll have DDR2 & DDR3 controllers and if u use it in a am2+ motherboard u use ddr2 and if u it in a am3 motherboard u use ddr3.

but some boards should have 2 ddr2 slots

This is true for the AM3 chips as they have both DDR2 & DDR3 memory controllers but the AM2+ 940 only has a DDR2 controller so therefore will not work in AM3 boards?

but some boards should have 2 ddr2 slots and 2 ddr3 slots, like intel as. . so it depends what motherboard u get.

Yes lets hope they do, its going to limit the amount of ram slots on the board though if they do this, presuming you can't use both with AM3 chips! The life span of the AM2+ 920 & 940 are going to be limited to DDR2 mobos otherwise and have no AM3 upgrade path, which would be a shame and make AM3 look much better long term.
