I'm looking to get my parents a bottle of fine Australian wine, around £50. I don't have a clue what's good and what's not so any help would be appreciated. :)

Is there such thing as 'Fine Australian Wine'? :)

Have you got any more information? As the type they like can change what is considered good. Red or White? Sweet, Medium, Dry? etc.

Sorry, should have mentioned I was looking for Red. I'm only going on Australian because I think that is what they prefer. Am open to anything though!

You could shoot for a £30. I'm not really that up on Aus wines. Shiraz would be a full bodied accompaniment to beef etc but I'm more a old french bod.

The best red I have ever had was an Amarone della Valpolicella Classico^ when on holiday in Gozo. Twas about 40 Euros. Absolutely perfect with the steak I had, but tastes way different to any Australian wine I have drunk*. Waitrose have a 2005 vintage bottle in their "special" section for £17 but you should look out for the 2004 which goes for slightly more.

*Cheap Jocabs Creek Shiraz :p

I like Bordeaux reds... St. Emillion is my favourite (French) region, something like this perhaps?

For that extra special touch I'd pick a Grand Cru Classe, should be able to find one for his budget. Certainly in France you can

Perhaps even step up to the Premier classes, but then you start getting to very high prices if you want something which you should be allowed to drink in the near future

Or for a very drinkable wine I'd choose a bottle of Mouton-Rothschild. Very nice stuff, the best reasonably-priced wine we've found so far in France. I'm afraid I don't know much about it other than that their standard bottle was around £6, so I'm assuming their pricier stuff is just as nice.

There are so many that I could get. Just going to have to take the plunge and pick one!

Thanks for all the help!

Surely if you don't have a clue and need to ask then there would be no noticeable difference from say a £15 bottle?

Unless of course it is just Australian wine you are not sure on :)

I just want to spoil the parents that's all. Want to buy them a top class wine that they can have whenever they want. Something special if you get me.
