Is there any advantages to using a Docsis 2.0 modem with Virgin Media, I have for the last few years used a Motorola SB4200 modem which has been fine but is only Docsis1.1 but Virgin recently sent me an Ambit 256 which is 2.0 compatible, I'm wondering if it's worth switching over?

if they've sent you a newer modem there is generally a reason for it - my guess is it's because your current modem might not be able to work properly with your current package.

IIRC ntl don't actually use dociss 2 (rather they use 1.1 and 3), however the older modems sometimes had trouble with certain settings that the newer ones don't, and as the docis 2 modems are fully backwards compatible they use them in 1.1 mode.

Depends how your connection is. My advice would be if it aint broke, don't fix it.

That's what I thought, cheers.

Yeah I rang them last week when I was getting loads of time outs etc, the bloke said my modem frequency looked a little off and he would send a new one out, one day later my connection was fine again so I'm guessing it was a problem with their network.

I see, I'll just keep it as a backup then should my trusty old Motorola die.

Thanks for the responses.
