Hi,
I read somewhere that win xp wont recognise 4gb of ram, it'll only be less that 3gb. So is it a waste of time and money to buy 4gb?

I'm fairly certain I have 32-bit xp, can you get a 64-bit version and if so how do I check?

IIRC it sees: RAM - system memory (Gfx cards etc). So for most I'd imagine have a 512mb card, XP will see 3.5Gb.

I'm in the same position, I'm getting my new gear today, inc 4Gb RAM, and not sure if I'm going to change to vista. 1 or 2 of the games I play will only run in XP.

I've heard good things about Kingston. And yes you can get a 64 bit version of both XP and Vista, they both have 32 bit versions too. Be warned that some (very few) apps and games may not work correctly with a 64bit os.

To check right click 'my computer' and select Properties. On the General tab it will say what OS you are running. If it doesn't say 64 anywhere, then it is a 32bit OS.

It should read between 3gb/3.5gb or ram on 32bit, which is still a good improvment over the standard 2gb people use. You can always upgrade to 64-bit later to get the other 1/2gb ram if you really need it.

The compatibility list has certainly grown in the past year or two with 64bit operating systems. As a 64bit Vista user, I have only ran into one issue with a program, which was with my MP3 player drivers not being recognised, reason being it's 4 years old and I don't even think XP 64bit was out then

What the..!? An hour and a half after I post that I'm buying that Kingston ram thats on special offer, the offer ends and its back to normal price! Hmmf!

Yeah I know, but how unlucky is that? I went out to post a letter and get a little shopping and was gonna buy the memory when I got home (was waiting for peoples opinions of kingston). Maybe some of the other stuff I wanted has gone on offer instead.
