This is true of company cars regardless of what they are, quite why ANYONE bothers is a complete mystery to me. I get a below average allowance from my employer, and it is STILL cheaper to buy an equivalent car.
 
And maintain it? Mine was owned by BP originally, never wanted for anything and always went to an OPC for work. You know how brakes & tyres mount up on these things...

I am assuming that if the company car was not taken then a cash allowance would be payable? On top of the very high tax on company cars and company fuel cards i cannot see how it is ever worth it.

For me I think the taxable benefit on mine was around 6K pa without fuel. If you compare that to buying privately and just what it's lost in depreciation (1st year approx 20K) then the figures work out. Unless of course you talking about buying second hand in which case it's a no brainer.
