Which 1000 watt PSU should I go for

Hello there. I'm going to be upgrading my PSU in the near future, as I am seriously contemplating a crossfire 4870X2 setup. I was looking at the 1000 watt Corsair unit, but I'm not too sure if I like the flattened, ribbon-like, modular cables (I have a 650 watt Corsair unit in my other system).

What are my options?

IIRC, the total system power of a quad core and a 4870X2 uses 430W, so I would say a 650W was pushing it (for crossfire 4870X2's). Do you really need 2x 4870X2's? Are you running a 30" monitor?

you'll be fine with a 750w unit unless your running a awful lot of other stuff as well

I am.

I'm just wondering whether the way the cables are bundled (ie, in a flat, ribbonised form) on the Corsair units are the way to go, and was wondering if there are any alternatives.

I also have a Tagan unit, which -in terms of keeping the cables tidy- is a nightmare.

Even a good 650W couln't handle that load. I would consider anything up from 750-850W, as this will allow a little bit of room for adding extra hard drives and a like without running the PSU on its limits

Aye.

I'm set on a good 1000 watt unit. I'm just more concerned about cabling at this stage, as I'm a bit of a neat freak, when it comes to keeping the inside of my case tidy.

pc power & cooling, corsair and be quiet all come recommended.
id avoid the tagans as i had 3 die in 18 months.

could you give us a list of whats going in it ?

QX9650 (overclocked to 4Ghz)
Asus P5E (x38 chipset)
2 500GB HDDs (seems to be enough for now, but I may/may not add more in the future)
x24870x2 (2GB GDDR5) I might overclock this.
4 full memory banks (8GB total of 1000mhz DDR2)
Creative X-Fi Fatality

Naturally, my PSU would also have to power my fans, my reserator XT, my case lighting, optical drive(s), etc, etc.

sounds similar to my rig and its running just fine on the 750.
sig +4hdd, 1 optical, water cooling, 6 case fans.
if you want 1kw though go for the corsair or be quiet if you want modular. be quiet has braided cables.
