Nice tank! Impressive! I bet that takes some maintenance.

Bigger the tank, less the maintenence :)

My girlfiend and I have started research for our self sustaining aquarium. She being a Mrine Biologist helps a tonne. The idea is that the selection of corals and algae's should provide the nutrients, food and cleaning required to never have to put our hands into the water. I've seen a few before. They're expensive to set up, but they're awesome.

Essentially creating your own balanced eco-system? That's impressive, handy too!

I don't keep fish but there's a shop that I walk past every day going to uni that has started advertising an AquaCube (I'm sure that's what it's called) this thing is about 15cm square. It didn't look big enough to hold any fish whatsoever but could someone clarify that?
Is there any guidelines for minimum space per fish or anything like that?

AquaCubes and other very small aquariums (sometimes called nano tanks) aren't suitable for fish. They're usually used only for aquatic plants and for small freshwater shrimps. I personally wouldn't go for anything under 30cm, and even then you need to choose your fish with great care. That said, the slightly bigger ones look awesome as desktop shrimp tanks. You can get some absolutely stunning red and white freshwater shrimps at the moment, and they're ideal for tanks around 30cm.

Yup that's the idea. They're awesome to watch. Google em, there's some interesting sites if you're into that sort of thing.

There's a lot of maths involved, and i probably wouldnt attempt it if my girlfriend didnt do what she does ;) Knew she'd be useful for something... other than telling me the latin name of every shell we see on a beach :(

currently setting my 'slice of the ocean' up, just purchased a 3x2x2 tank with 30x18x18 sump, intending on keeping a full reef aquarium, fish, LPS, SPS and a couple of hard corals, though may change itenerary.

heres some pics of some of my and dads tanks :)

first 2 pics are our oscars mine is the lutino and second 2 pics are my female salvin with her babys/juvies and my albino gibby.

I really want a fish tank for the apartment but they're so flippin' expensive. Why does 5 pieces of glass stuck together cost so much?!

aye the initial set up prices are insane and they depreciate in value almost as much as computers once their second hand.

just pick up a second hand tank and stand for next to nothing but be sure to ask to see the tank filled with water so you can spot any leaks :)

Im pretty sure my dad has a tank in the loft, used to have a huge one.

What sort of costs am i looking at for setting up a marine (Thats the seafish type on yeah, before i make myself look a tit) tank, not including the fish obviously?

marines can be pretty expensive :( why not try a cichlid set up to get all the basics of fishkeeping down eg experience etc? then consider going marine?

Some gorgeous fish tanks photos here. I have two aquariums but are winding down one of them, the other in my computer room at the moment is more of a night light but will be redone out in the new year, when I've finnished upgrading this bloody computer - been doing it since June, lol.
