Hypnotism - Thoughts?

My uncle was a clinical Hypnotherapist and Chairman of the National Council of Psychotherapists.
As such i saw him on a weekly basis for over 2 years, being hypnotised for relaxation, de-stressing, or even as guinea pig for him, as i totally trust him.
Its an amazing experience tbh. I DO however, feel that you have to subscribe to the theory of it working for you to benefit the most from a hypnotherapy session. If you fight it, there's no chance, as its your subconscious that its dealing with, which happens to be thes best survival tool the human psyche has.
McDaniel, i'm more than willing to share my experience/thoughts so any questions you have, i'm willing to help as much as i can.
I've also been stage hypnotised.....very very different....:(

Hypnotherapy is all fantasy in your mind, just as god, jedi and the devil are.

It's all about tricking the week minded into believing something. Thats not meant as a insult, it's just the same as weights will have more effect on weak muscles than stronger ones.

If your susceptible to suggestion hypnotherapy can be great, all some people often need is to believe something has happened to them, to make a change.

The highly relaxed state hypnotherapy puts people in, no doubt can be helpful to some to discuss distressful matters, or subjects that they struggle difficult to deal with.

Hypnotherapists cannot make anyone do anything they don't want to.
Often stage acts see people eating onions, doing silly things in front of crowds etc. These people are fully in control and are doing everything by there own choice to show off.

I have done it, specifically for dealing with some pent up emotion.

For me it was the nicer option rather than go and speak to a shrink or something. It actually worked well for me and to be honest I quite enjoyed it.

I had a woman hypnotise me and she would start off by just getting you to relax and then she would say all this chilled out stuff, I never felt out of control just felt really relaxed and a couple of times I fell asleep :D.

Once you are completely relaxed you are at your most receptive, so that's when she would deal with the issues in my life and help my brain to move on.

It doesn't work for everyone and it I think if you do go and do it you need to really believe thats it going to work before you walk in and teach your mind to help it work (if that makes sense)

Hope this helps :)

When your hypnotised to act like a chicken you know what your doing but you cant stop yourself. *Quite bizzare*.

My friend was hypnotised so he could stop smoking 2 years ago. cost him over £130 and he hasnt touched a cig since. Or so he says

i agree, if you dont want to let yourself relax and go with the experience you wont be hypnotized.

also agree that it is something that generally is better with repetition. the more you do it the better it gets.

Hypnosis affects the smart and the strong minded more than it does the weak minded. :)

i got so 'into' it that after a while all i needed to do was sit in the chair, my uncle would reach over to turn the music on, and i'd be under!
Whilst under hypnosis i've had the most vivid feelings/experiences in my mind than ever before in my life.

Rubbish tbh. Its not trickery for the weak minded, its opening the mind and educating/reprogramming (for want of a better word) it. Some peoples subconscious are more closed off than others. Hypnotherapy taps into it to get to the route of certain issues.

Absolute truth :)
Stage hypnotism usually starts off with the hypnotist testing you to see if you're susceptible to lowering your inhibitions.
I was Elvis Presley siging Jailhouse Rock into a carrot for a microphone in front of 600 people. It felt natural to do as my inhibitions were lowered. I didn't however enjoy the guy who tried to hump me, so i pushed him away. I was always in control. Nobody's biatch, am I! :p

Surely the strong minded by virtue are the ones who don't need hypnosis? I'm not saying everyone who has hypnosis is weak-minded though -- far from it. It's just perhaps they haven't yet learnt how to work through their demons.

Could you explain a bit more? What was it for, did anything change? Do you believe in the ability of Hypnotherapy?

I had about 4 seasons with this hypnotherapist and whilst I admit I was in a hypnotised state (odd feeling, however you are in total control.) I felt it ultimately didn't do much for me and I was in the same state mentally as I was when I began. Maybe I should have give it more time. But everyone is different.

Hypnotherapy encompasses techniques like, simply positive thinking, guided imagery (really worked well for me) and other i know of.
I'm willing to post my experience on guided imagery as that was fantastic, if anyone's interested of course. :)

i'm curious, please tell

I tried for my bad sleep. Only it was round this womans home which made it to impersonal and she had lovely feet too, which didn't help. I kept peeking at them when my eyes should have been closed.. So it didn't work for me :(

ok :)
Basically, once under, i was asked to picture myself in somewhere fairly serene with maybe grass and water (usual tranquil type scenery i suppose). I actually imagined Rutland Water. Each step of the way involved me being asked what i could see, so it really was me guiding, well me really, for most of it. I walked around the lake, saw a small locked hut, but had no key to enter it (for the life of me i cannot remember the significance of this, but it was explained to me very well at the time).
This next bit was mostly under the guidance of the hypnotist....
Anyway as i got to a grassy hill on the other side of the lake, i was asked to imagine a rucksack on my back, and that i was walking uphill to a teathered hot air balloon. Each step the sack got heavier and heavier, until when it got too heavy to bear i arrived at the balloon. I was hot and tired. I opened the rucksack to see it full of different shaped object of all differing colours. I was told that each object represented my anger and agression (lol, there was a lot of it at the time). I was asked what i'd like to do next, i said "put the objects in the balloon". One by one i took each object out and placed them in the basket of the balloon all the time the bag getting lighter and me feeling a little better, until i though the rucksack was empty. I was asked if i could see anything lying around on the grass. Yes, i could see a knife on the floor next to the tether. So i picked it up and cut the tether.
The balloon floated away, taking with it my aggression. I looked into the rucksack to see a few small objects left. [ahaa].

After the sesison, i swear to god, nothing could upset or anger me for days, and the very next morning i stubbed my toe getting my breakfast, which would normally have resulted in a tirade of expletives and me punching everything within reach. I just laughed my head off.
This tranquility continued all weekend. Then the following tuesday i was playing gym hockey and someone nearly butt-ended me. I snapped, turned round and levelled the poor guy. Then immediately calmed down and apologised.
My uncle said as we'd only done one session on anger it was a pressure release.
My god how powerful and vividly real that session was though.
The significance of the remaining objects in the rucksack was that we all need a certain amount of aggression in our character.....
very very impressive stuff for me.

My uncle also told how he cured a guy who had osteo-arthritis/porosis(?) for 23 years. He got the guy to imagine being tiny and walking down his arm, down into his fingers and seeing that his bones were like walls in urgent need of plaster repair. So upon asking him what he was going to do, the guy said "i'm sending the plasterers in" to whit he sent in a team of plasterers down his arm into his fingers to start plastering up all the holes etc.
Apparently this therapy continued for a while, but the guy cured himself as it were and has never looked back.

Would you say it would be fair to compare this experience to a controlled dream? Obviously with a much more beneficial outcome

Man, there is soooo much I would change about myself if I could be hypnotised. I'd give myself :

1) Confidence
2) Perserverence
3) Make myself work harder
4) Not get depressed
5) Make myself want to jump out of bed every morning instead of wanting to hide from the world
6) Remember people's names
7) Think about the world around me more
8) Be more confident about learning new things
