And now I'm thinking about my options. I'm 20 y/o male so insurance is a killer, I want to spend as little as possible on this years motoring, what kind of cars should I be looking at? What should I avoid?
 
Just get something small and cheap. Micra, fiesta, clio etc. Fiesta 1.25s are meant to be decent and relatively nippy.
 
Original Mini. Cheap to insure, cheap to run, quite good fun, just don't crash it otherwise you'll be mince meat. Easy to work on if you are that way inclined to keep costs down? Mind you, zero street cred unless you're into them and don't care which I suspect at 20 you will be slightly consious of what your mates will think of it?

Only just turned 20 this month, and I'm 6' 1" and I'm not exactly skinny so an original mini might be a squeeze, I learnt in a new shape micra and the seat didn't go back far enough for my legs.

Focus sounds good, nice to have the extra space as I'm in a band, have to see what kind of qutoes I get on it.

Oi, tis what I decided on :p

Not so sure the street cred thing is true either, although that was never my real aim. People tend to look at them as they go past (not in a negative way!) and most of my friends think they are fairly cool. I am 3 years younger, though.
 
I don't have a problem with them hence I suggested it. I love em. But I know/presume what a lot of 20 yr olds would think of them - perhaps wrongly. Mind you, now we know he's 6'1" and in a band I'd be inclined to think wrong choice unless he cuts the roof off, removes front seats and uses the rears and buy sa trailer for his gear :D
 
Surely something like a diesel Xantia would be a good choice? Frugal engine, not a bad place to be in - well far better than any old clio or fiesta interior anyhow - plus insurance shouldn't be too bad as it isn't really a desirable youngsters car.
 
Diesel ZX or 306. Latter is better for insurance, former for initial outlay on the car. Both have an estate form, ZX rarer but significantly cheaper to buy. Both cars are basically the same underneath.

At his age I'd suspect a 1.4 or maybe a 1.6 would be the max engine due to insurance. I'd rather get a 1.25 Fez that a 306 1.4.
 
1.9d engine is fine on insurance, costs no more than 1.25 Fiestas for me. Was looking up 306dturbos a while ago.

The 1.9D 306 isn't too bad, even in TD form. If you go for the ZX what you spend on insurance you'll save on the purchase price of the car. Either way it's a case of bend over and think of England at 20 whatever you buy!
