I can understand that he had a reputation with other regulars on that forum for doing similar stuff so they're bound to have egged him on initially, but I can't really get my head around why people were in the chat on his webcam channel cracking jokes and laughing about it long after he had stopped breathing.

Damn, this reminds me of when I declared my suicidal-ness on OcUK coz of something totally stupid.

Because apparently he said he was going to commit suicide every week, and the fact I don't care.
I would say that if you have an option between egging somebody on or trying to discourage them you ought to try to discourage them. Yes, if left to his own devices (neither egged on nor discouraged) he may have done it eventually. However, if enough people tried to convince him otherwise there would be a far greater chance of him not commiting suicide.
If somebody has a 75% chance of dying and, with little cost to yourself, you could cut that to a 25% chance, then that is worth doing, whether or not he does actually end up dying. This is no different.
