How true is it to say that anybody unstable enough to be able to be egged on into suicide would have done it themselves at some point anyway?

Very true!

But also, I'm sure when people 'egg' you on for whatever, you can get worked up and either lose it or go ahead and do it to show your not scared. I'm guessing he was in such a mess emotionally he did it as to show them he had the balls to do it, and some how make them feel pain/shock for egging him on?

The mind can be a very messed up place.

For once I agree with this, Chances are he went online hoping someone would make his mind up for him and unfortunately for him, it was the wrong decision.

While I'm not afraid of death I am of the thought of ending my life prematurely, I just cant get over the fact that, thats it, there is nothing more you cease to exist, I just couldn't contemplate doing it.

I don't think we lost a cancer cure here guys. Sounds harsh? It is. Suicide, in my opinion, is a very personal thing. If you want to die, fine, that's totally up to you. I think that his choice to broadcast it negates any need for me to be 'respectful'.

I think it's only partially true. In time he may have started to feel better.

Wow, that's pretty bad; in a more pragmatic mode of thought though, you would have thought that at least one member of the forum may have phoned the police at some point not long after seeing him OD.

From what I was reading on their forums one guy was trying to ring the police, He lived in India of all places!

Very sad that they egged him on, but if it is true that he was making posts like that in the past, I'm not surprised many people there didn't take it seriously.

Indeed, what people in this situation need most is help and support. When they don't get it, and are ridiculed or egged on, their world turns into a very dark place indeed :(

I had a family member attempt suicide last year, and it wasn't a pleasant experience. It comes as a bit of a shock when you realise that they are struggling so much mentally, especially if they appear to be fine on the outside.

I'm sure you get the type that just threatens or attempts suicide just to get attention, especially on the internet but meh.

I like to think I would always take someone's threat of suicide seriously and act appropriately.

However if someone walked outside onto a ledge on a building opposite my office I honestly don't know how I'd react. I'd probably be so bored that something like that might be initially amusing, especially if other people enforced that line of thinking. However I wouldn't dream of actively encouraging or getting my cameraphone out or anything like that. I guess what I'm saying is that it initially wouldn't formulate in my mind as an actual realistic possibility that this person is about to terminate themselves.

Personally whenever I see someone getting picked on in these forums I wince a little.

Very true. In a lot cases, those who are contemplating suicide - and MAY be only minutes away from actually doing it - need nothing more than an understanding or sympathetic hand to be extended. The last thing you want to do to any person threatening to kill themselves is goad them on.

For example, look at the recent case of the student who jumped from a carpark in Derby. Officers had spent a VERY long time up there with him, bringing him back and almost there. Except after only a few goads from the baying mob of chavs on the ground he jumped.

THAT'S what it's like to be suicidally depressed. Even a small reinforcement of that "presence" in your mind is enough to overwhelm. Kindness can shine through, and for some even the smallest amount of it can reinforce existence.

The people in the live chat room ought to be ashamed of themselves. If he could see that while he did it, at least one of them should have tried to engage him -- tell him to stop it, ask for his phone number and call him. Act like a damn human being for christ's sake.

chances are people didnt take him seriously so thought they would joke about it, as lets face it, people who declare their suicidal tendencies usually do it for attention, its the ones that are silent who will actually do it. but being on bodybuilding i imagine he then did it to prove his "manliness". idiot. obviously i've jumped to wild conclusions there but im fairly positive im right.

Shame :(

I really don't understand online bullying... if somebody bully's you online...block them?Block their e-mail?Block their forum posts?Visit a different forum?

Well said.

Don't get me wrong, I think it was very disgusting the way a lot of those people acted on that forum when this was going on. It isn't nice at all, I definitely wouldn't act the way those guys did on there.

I agree with you that it wouldn't click in my mind that he would have done it either. Pathetic comes to mind towards those that egged him on & if they have any sense of decency they will be feeling like **** right now, But from what I was reading he cried wolf a lot of times on there, Although it doesn't change the fact they should have took it more seriously.
