Hairy Exhaust?

I just went to my car to find what looks like long thick sooty hair hanging out of my exhaust which I could feel was attached to the inside of it.

Is this likely part of the baffle and could it be something nasty like asbestos?

I have pulled the 'hair' out and the car seems to run fine so no breathing problems but I have never seen this before?

Admit it, you reversed into your neighbors cat at speed didnt you?

:D not that I remember but it would have to be more like a black panther looking at the length of the hair!

Just a bit typical though as its due an MOT tomorrow and I have already had to replace the washer pump at the weekend just gone.

It's part of the exhaust baffling. Don't think it's asbestos though.

You might need to get a new exhaust, possibly...

Happened to my step sisters Celica a year or so back, revved the engine and it came flying out :D

I think she ended up buying a new exhaust.

As said it is just part of the exhaust packing. Im sure all it does is make the exhaust note quieter though. Race cans on bikes are basically a perforated tube wrapped in fiberous material to deaded the sound a little, bar the newer ones which have none!

If you can put up with the exhaust note being a little noisier I wouldnt worry about it too much :D You may find the exhaust note becomes too tinny in the end and then you would have to purchase a new one as I doubt it has been designed to be re-packed.

If you have an MOT I guess the best thing would be to go and take the car out for a drive giving it a good blast! That should get rid of any of the lose fibres. Then drive sedately to the MOT centre and hope no more decides it wants out!

I ended up with loads of it coming out my Cavalier exhaust years ago. Yards of the stuff! It just kept on coming - as the exhaust baffles break down and corrode, all the wadding comes out.

You'll need a new backbox.

Its the exhaust packing, same happened to my old Clio. I didn't get a new exhaust straight away but I eventually did. It looked like I had swallowed a horse and it had its tail hanging out the back.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I have noticed that there is a hole in the back box so this is the straw that means the trusty rusty mondeo is going.

Still its not been too bad in 2 years of ownership and my first go at bangernomics! A 1994 mondeo and in the time I have owned it, I have only had to replace the washer pump for £6 and tax & insure it.
