Q Acoustics 1010i Speaker set

Can't find the Lites in black :(

You'll only find them second hand in black. I think they were the first colour to be sold out with the cherry looking colour.

Silver then went, with the rosewood left.

Re-furbs or second hand may be the best bet. Make sure you audition any second hand kit, the first kit i ordered new came with a couple of blown sats! They were however quicly replaced!

Does anyone elses quad sub hum when not in use but plugged in?

im confused - other people rave about the quad l-ite package and now someone mentions SVS package

I dont mind getting refurbished

and to throw a 3rd package into the mix what about the wharfedale diamond 9.1 speaker package 5.1?

I have heard the 9.1's through a cheapo amp and I liked them a lot for the price. Got them for the GF as a stereo only package for music and the odd film.

SVS also make a bookshelf set similar to the Quad Lites which are meant to be very nice also, never heard them myself but everyone who buys them thinks they're great......albeit posts on the tinterweb ;)

my personal opinion depending on funds etc ....is if you also plan to listen to music quite a lot then get some quality bookshelfs for the fronts, MA RS1/B&W 685/Dali Ikon and a matching centre channel then piece together the sub and surrounds when you get more cash. these all in one sets are pretty nice for HT duties but they're slightly lacking for stereo and when you're all done you will have a much better setup overall.

if you're going to spend 500 anyway you will get some quality bookshelfs and a center channel 2nd hand for that money, another few hundred for a 2nd hand sub + surrounds and you have a nice piece of kit.

that would be my approach but there's also nothing wrong @ all going with the QA/Quad/SVS gear either......it's the easier option :)

Thanks marscay for the info

I stay in a 2 bedroom flat so the lounge isnt huge and I lack space for rear speaker stands etc. I also dont listen a great deal to music and if I do I dont play it loud out of consideration for the neighbours.

been reading AVForums and Im pretty keen on the quad l-ite package in rosewood with a onkyo606 - would this be good for PS3, BD and occasional music/parties in small room?

If this sounds good then its a matter of finding the cheapest place to get them.

Im a bit confused on what type of cabling to get though. 2mm....1.5mm? bi-wired with banana plugs? bear in mind I have no idea what the difference SQ wise will be and will have a rear speaker cabling mare.

What are good quality cheap stands?

and last thing.....the sofa we sit in is against the rear wall and the rear speakers will need to be mounted on this rear wall probably to the sides of the sofa.....is this ok as everyone seems to say the rears need to go behind the sofa but theres a wall there.

Apologies for onslaught of questions but you seem knowledgable and you answered my last post.....you kinda fell into guru spot here :)

Sounds good to me.

A BK Gemini may suffice for you if the room is small. I have an 8" sub in a smallish room and it does the low frequency job very well.

You can get a refurbed set (without the sub) for £200 in Rosewood just google it.

2mm is fine, no need to spend money on banana plugs.

Atacama maybe.

Surrounds in 5.1 AFAIK are supposed to be to the sides anyway. Surround backs in 7.1 go behind you. I have a similar problem to you and in the end went for some little cube speakers from Monitor Audio that are easy to mount and sound excellent for surround duties.

Awesome thanx for input.

Ok so quad l-ite package with onkyo606......get 2mm cable no plugs investigate atacama stands :)

whats the deal regarding bi wiring? is it necessary?

2.5mm VanDamme Blue is very good cable at a nice price, you don't need banana plugs they're just for convenience but they are handy.

forget bi-wiring it's a waste of cable :)

what you guys think of using QED silver anniversary XT cable for the 2 front and center speakers (and bi-amping the front left and right) and then using QED micro cable for the rear speakers?

My mate has just got Onkyo 606 he paired with some Tannoys, he's very happy with them. Here's a price match I found for him, which he used after they were out of the original Denon he was going to go for.

Richer sounds will price match the Onkyo 606 to £350 (should be 340 if they take off the extra tenner), and that should come with a 1m HDMI cable to. Price match to Peter Tyson. Be aware they must be in stock at PT!

He's bitstreaming from his Samsung BD player, and hes more than happy, it's worse for music than his old Harmon-Kardon reciever, but he doesnt think its terrible when combined with his Tannoys, not to mention he thought the speakers were clipping originally at some parts of Iron Man as the Clinking sounds were so sharp compared to normal in Dolby TruHD! haha

personally i wouldn't worry about premium speaker cable with entry level gear, van damme blue is good enough for sound engineers ;)

nothing wrong with bi-amping though go for it.

at least half of that cost is the sub ;)

speaker cable is way too snake oily for me, you hear what you want to hear.....not that you want crap but good quality 2.5mm is plenty good enough.

ye but I have small room remember...shouldnt need a lot of cable to start with...and besides I dont want to skimp on audio cables.

Ive decided im gonna bi-amp the front left and right speakers and bi-wire the centre using QED silver anniversary XT cable, then run QED micro to the rears....does that sound...sound? (lame attempt at humour there)

I agree,

I bought 2 x 2.5mm² Loudspeaker Cable (100m Reel)

Oxygen free electrolytic copper
Transparent cadnium free PVC
Fine wire strands
Conductor:2 x 2.5mm²
Inner Conductor: 2 x 322 strands x 0.10mm²
100m Length
This cable is polarised (+/-)

75 quid.

Oxlde, dont bother, listen to what people are telling you!

biwiring is a waste of time, and cable makes very little difference unless you are running excedingly demanding speakers, which any of these mentioned in this thread are not. Bi-amping does make a good difference but again, you do not need expensive cable to do so:)

What 5.1 speaker set are you running mate?

im running a mixture of speakers, mission m71i fronts, tannoy e11 in the center (i begrudge paying well over the odds for a matching center when i want to upgrade the fronts anyway) and mission m5ds surrounds. The front speakers are bi-amped, all run off my onyko 805.

The subwoofer is aa home grown effort. 15" JBL 1504d in a 1.5 cu.ft sealed box, powered by a denon pma100m amplifier. It totally exceeds anything you can buy for the money (cost me £50 all in!) and where i sit has a responce flat from 70hz to 10hz. It looks a bit cheap though as it's forward firing and you can see the cone. I'm going to have a think about designing a new box for it:)

Speaker cynergy is critical, especially across the front 3 speakers. not so much the rears but its still important, so a decent set such as the SVS or the L-ites set will do you very well indeed. like others here i dont rate the 1010i's that highly:)
