Can't you buy XP anymore?

Reasoning behind it is due to my Vista install going boobies up and leaving me with only Ubuntu to keep me company and I assumed XP would be the cheaper of the two.

XP will not be for sale much longer though, so stock up now.

The only reason windows 3 was for sale until recently was it's use in some embedded systems (in flight entertainment systems in particular).

Bare in mind that Vista business and ultimate editions have downgrade rights, so you don't need to nesessarily buy a XP licence.

Loads of places still sell windows 98, so I doubt xp is going to dissapear anytime soon.

Many OEM manufacturers still sell pc's with Ultimate and Business with the option to downgrade to XP if you wanted to.

No it isn't sp3 was released this year...

Anyway many older programs won't work on vista, 16-bit support was removed completely and many older pc's aren't capable of running it.

Not true. 16-bit support was only removed from 64-bit Vista. 16-bit apps will work just fine on 32-bit Vista.
