Tomb Raider : Underworld Demo

Was hoping for a few opinions on the game tonight, anyone playing? I normally go for Tomb Raider games on release but with such a backlog of titles to play,I've held off this time.

Could easily be persuaded to get hold of a copy sooner rather than later though.

If you've got a copy let us all know what you think, you're opinions are far more valuable than the dodgy reviews on game sites.;)

Judging by playing the demo a few times, it seems like more of the same but with better graphics. I find the camera annoying on my 360 controller, as I did with anniversary, but keyboard and mouse seem to be OK, but not great. If this is addressed in a patch, it's all good, but just be aware. I'm sure you've played the demo anyway.

I got stuck on the first level already. Only just figured out what I was doing after 30 minutes. :D It seems like your average Tomb Raider but with the prettiest graphics so far.

Im enjoying it so far, not that far in like, just had bit of a mare getting of some ship, now onto the next level which is the demo one, you can choose your weapons you want and also your atire while the level is loading, i went for long pants and an assault rifle. :D

Thanks for your opinions chaps, sounds like they've stuck to the tried and tested Tomb Raider formula, which is no bad thing imo.I'm assuming the graphics are based around the Legend/anniversary engine, the former ran like a dog on release iirc.

How does Underworld run? Well optimized as Anniversary seemed to be or hungrier like Legend?

Underworld looks/runs better than Legend by a fair degree but back then I had an 8800GT which didn't like fsaa at all whilst now I have a 4870 which loves it, even with 6xfsaa and 8xaf it runs smoothly all the time, 60fps? easy going...

I picked short pants because...well because it looks better!

This game really does remind me of original TR games back in the day. I didn't like Legend but this is great.

Got it this morning and like it but the FPS drops are insane. Must be an ATI driver bug as its suddenly drops for no reason. Gonna try what some of the others have done. Failing that both my ATI cards will go on the MM to be replaced by GTX260 216 Maxcores as that seems to be the new hotness and VFM king.

Agreed, i didn't play much of legend though.

Camera does get a bit stuck sometimes, had my screen shaking like **** once when the camera got stuck inbetween 2 walls. :D

I like both games but the difference is you dont have those 2 goons rabbiting down your earpiece every 3 seconds in Underworld as you did in Legend.

I quite liked that element of Legend. Was nice to hear some conversation once in a while and a bit of explanation as to what's going on. Made a nice change to just being stuck in isolation.

Well Lara will comment on significant findings during gameplay and she talks with her 'tech-buddies' between missions, so I reckon they've found a nice balance in this game.

The demo will have players travelling to the western coast of Thailand - the second destination in Tomb Raider: Underworld - to experience a taste of the adventure that is to come. Gamers can master steep coastal cliffs, navigate perilous and crumbling ruins, evade vicious wild animals and use state-of-the-art gear such as the grapple or the new Field Assistance System to create and uncover paths that will take players deep into the challenging wilds of Thailand.

Thanks for the link.

Wasn't expecting much from the game, but ended up really enjoying it and looking at buying the previous game also.

Thanks.

Think its time Eidos gave this series to someone else to develop as Crystal Dynamics are tiring out now. 3 games in 3 years. Legend looked great and even now looks pretty good in places. Anniversary was not as strong graphically as Legend but the gameplay was better and more levels to explore and stuff to do so still a pretty good release.

Underworld however is giving me the impression that CD's TR formula is growing old real fast. Graphically no improvement at all from Legend apart from some of the pretty water FX. A lot of the textures & shaders also look like the exact same ones used in Legend.

Controls are messed up big time. So many bugs when you try to control Lara she does not respond or responds with a slight delay which I find very confusing.

Lots of silly camera & clipping issues as well.

But worse of all is the poor performance in places. I get a constant 60FPS on Legend & Anniversary even with lots of AA. Underworld drops FPS all the time and worse than that is pretty unstable as well. I can play Fallout 3 for 8 hours at a time on the same PC 9same gfx drivers) and its rock solid stable no BSODs whatsoever.

Underworld gave my PC build its first BSOD today and also had to reboot into safe mode to fix it as it would not come back up. Think this game was rushed for a November release and the play testing was not even done properly at all as how on earth did the control issues get through when the previous games on the same engine were flawless on a 360 controller.

Its not just me either, PS3 & 360 owners are also complaining bigtime about lots of issues with controls, hardlockups & bugs which prevent certain puzzles from even being completed. Hope they do a major patch to address some of these soon as do not fancy even playing it again if its going to BSOD and take Vista down with it.

This is some achievement nowadays for a game to do this as Vista + SP1 for me no other game recent or old has ever done this.

I agree about the awkward controls and camera (it was obviously released too early), but visually I think its a big improvement over Legend in just about every way.
