Hi Guys,

Just found out at work that im going to have to start traveling to Sheffield to work for the considerable future. Anyone know roughly how long it takes and what the best route to take at 6am is and leaving Sheffield about 4pm?

Hope this is the right forum,

Thanks, Russ

will take about an hr and a half according to mapping sites. But thats no taking rush hour traffic into account. heading over the peak district on the mapping. Not sure if thats going to be quicker than the M1 but at rush hour it might just be. 50 miles or there abouts. But 80 miles on M1

I was really excited at the thought of driving through Buxton every morning when its nice n quite...then i realised ill be in a works van and not my 182 lol. I guess the only way is to try the different routes and see how the fare up.

A50 up to the M1 would be my bet mate for you. Not sure how congested either get ar rush hour!

Yeah a50 -m1 was my thoughts as well tbh. I'm hoping to avoid a considerable amount of traffic in the morning just the return journey that bothers me.

Yeah sucks getting home late from graft. Anyway you could leave alittle earlier. Would then at least misss the rush hour in sheffield

Where abouts in Sheffield?

I always try and leave about 4.30pm but I still get caught in the traffic. Parkway (A630) is one of the worst roads ever:p

As Tim said, where abouts in Sheffield? There are a few roads/areas to try and avoid at rush hour as they just get massively congested.

Except for the promise of fuel being under 85p a litre by the end of the year I'd say find a B&B there, it's safer and cheaper than travelling.

I had to do this run for a fortnight (Barlaston > Sheffield). A50 was fine, right up until the point you hit the M1 junction, then it grinds to a halt, sit there queueing for maybe 15-20 mins, then you get onto the M1 and things free up again.

I've done worse commutes, but not many.

I'm not sure where in Sheffield. It will vary from day to day as im an apprentice electrician working for the Kier group who are shipping me upto Sheffield so alls i know is it will more than likely be some of Sheffields finest council estates.

I enquired about rolling 5 days work into 4 by doing an extra couple of tests a day which would then allow me to go up on a Monday morning, stop over Monday-Thursday and drive home Thursday night for a long weekend. Apparently that's not an option although i will ask my manager up Sheffield when i find out who he/she is.

As for the cost of traveling its not costing me a penny, work are providing me with a van, a fuel card and £50 a day travel allowance.

As im an apprentice this has worked really well for me financially as its basically doubling my wages and giving me an income better than a lot of electricians let alone apprentices. With the current lack of jobs in the construction industry i really do think my self lucky to have such an opportunity when lots of people in the trade are struggling for work.

Sheffield is a tricky one, it all depends on where abouts you need to end up! I drive 12(ish) miles to Rotherham when I'm in the office and at 7:30 in the monring it takes about an hour!

Doing periodic tests like mate? Ive been doing them lately up here for Gentoo (housing group) doing my head in now tho lol.

That is exactly what were doing lol Gotta do 4 a day.

Seems mad that they're willing to pay £2000 a month out in travel allowance for a spark and myself + the cost of fuel for the journey to do some testing up there when by all accounts Kier Sheffield is a pretty big company, im sure they could do it using there own blokes a lot cheaper.

Life as a spark ey? good aint it? lol

I just get given a big pile of job sheets and get told to get on with it lol. But if i find bonding aint upto scratch or something thats a code 1 then ive got to fix it there and then.

Wish i got the extra travel money tho :p lol

Good luck in your apprentership :)

A50 onto A38 into Derby out of Derby and join M1 at J28. Should take 1.20mins ish

He's got the best idea. The M1 from J25 to J28 has major roadworks until late 2010 to widen the road to 4 lanes. It is currently a 50mph speed limit with cameras and gets blocked up pretty much every morning without fail on both sides of the carriageway.
