Hello guys I just built a PC on my own for the first time, bought all the components separately. Cost me £600 all in all ( is that cheap? =/)

Anyway tested it and its all working fine and stable but when i started overclocking the CPU i started to get NO POST, BSOD and unstable i know that's all normal when your doing a trial and error OC.

To tell you the truth I'm dissapointed about this motherboard as the BIOS dosent give me too much to overclock+ it wont let me overclock q6660 stable@ 3.3Ghz. The highest i can get is 3.2Ghz but to achieved that i have my Vcore to 1.5V+ to be stable. Cpu temp 35+-40+ idle and 50+-60+ in full load. is that any good? I've been researching the net about reviews in this motherboard and guide about overclocking. I follow all the guides but no luck i coudn't get 3.3GHz+ stable. Atm i switch it to 3Ghz to be stable for long time with less Volts. My current FSB is 1333 the highest frequency my motheroard support according to manual but i can increase it in bios maximum to 2400. I achieve 3.2GHz my increasing my FSB to 1430 and DRAM frequency to 900. I need to increase my Vcore to 1.5V+ and VRAM to 2.4V to be stable. NB V and SB V are increased my 1-2 notch as well.

Am i doing anything wrong in my OC? i know that my 3hz set up is safer than the 3.2GHZ. shall i stick to 3Ghz? or was it possible to achieve 3.3Ghz+ in this motherboard? or was it my memory's limiting the CPU to OC higher. Please I'm a newbie in overclocking any advise will be great.

Btw i only wanted to overclock my CPU so it won't bottleneck my 9800GTX+ when I'm playing a Game.

All my drivers are up to date.

Welcome to the forums :)

It could be the RAM thats the problem as it may not like running at 900Mhz, and 2.4v is way too much for it

As you have an nvidia board go into the BIOS and run the memory unlinked from the CPU. Set the memory at 800Mhz and then you can clock your chip seperatly.

The 750i chipset isnt great for quads from what ive read but even at 3Ghz i dont think it would bottleneck your GFX :)

Welcome :)
I am not sure wheather MSI P7N SLI Platinum is good one or not
However I can tell you Q6600 is highly overclockable
I did up to 3850Mhz

You had Cpu temp 35+-40+ idle and 50+-60+ in full load
You don't need to be worried about that
Q6600 can be overclocked at high temperture
(70 might be ok)

anyway, no post?
I think it's not because of cpu problem
It might be RAM or North bridge

However I rather say it's because of Ram
Would you like to try 800Mhz clock?

and you don't normally need to put extra voltage on SB core unless you are not willing to overclock your GPU

Welcome to you too.

Just a point that i forgot before, the newer batches of the Q6600 are reportedly not as overclockable as the older ones, many failling to get to 3Ghz

Oh thank you guys for all your advise i didn;t expect a very quick response =). This forum is excellent.

About my OC lol, Yeah i think its my RAM is not good enough to overclock it i tried 800MHz and its unlinked all the time when i OC. still unstable@ 3.2GHZ. but like what you said Meatloaf maybe a got a new version of Q6660

Plus i managed to overclock it to 3.2Ghz very stable. Maybe then its really my RAM

I was thinking to sent back my RAM and replace it with Corsair XMS6400 4GB DDR2 (2x2GB) 800Mhz Non-ECC same price
which is i think better and give it a try if i can overclock better.

Do you think if i change the DRAM timing setting i might be able to overclock better?
But the original is 5-5-5-15 1.9-2-4V but i don't know whats the best
i tried to lower it to 4-4-4-15 @2.1v but didn't work.Anyway shall i try replacing my RAM?

Thank you guys

i have the p6n board and i am assuming there i not much difference between the p6 and p7 and i am hitting fsb of 1780 with this board on a 650i chipset! so it could be cpu or ram...

Cloudo you might want to remove those competitor links and read the rules, you dont want to get banned now do you?

Ok I'm happy with 3.2GHz i guess. and then again when my mobo got a new version of BIOS maybe there's possibility the OC feature will improve. Thank you very much guys.
CPU and RAM will be upgraded in the future. I guess I'll stick to this one for now. I can play all the latest Games in MAX settings and Run all my application fast.
Thank you all again. I update you guys if there's any change i achieved.

Nvidia 750i boards are pretty poor at overclocking, and even poorer at overclocking quads FYI :)

no, I can get 3.6 out of mine no problems..just dont because on air its pushing it a bit.

If you post your cpu vid etc I can give you pretty much the settings you should need for the clock you want.

WoW I'll post my BIOS setting picture now
yes please i want to run Q6660 @ 3.6 GHz =D
need to reboot now. to take pictures of it.

Here's the little video i made of my BIOS setting

With this setting its very stable with less power consumption
Run Prime95 for 24hour and all passed no errors. no hang, reboot BSOD.
And My CPU is@ 60C+ full load at the end of the 24hour Prime95.

But im still not happy I want 3.4Ghz+ now that its possible.

Give the following a try then;

FSB Clock 1520
Memory Clock 760

Intel EIST enabled

CPU Ratio 9

Advanced DRAM - put the top 4 on 5-5-5-15, leave rest on auto

PCI-E frequency 101

CPU Voltage +0.1500
Memory Voltage 2.10
FSB voltage 1.40
NB 1.44
SB 1.56

Those will give you 3.42GHz (380x9)

Try that, if it works check temps. Lemme know how it goes :-)

If it is stable, then go to Advanced CPU feature in the BIOS, press F4(or F3 or F5, one of the three) and some new options should appear. Enable C1E support, it's wicked :p

also to the guy a few posts above.. this board goes well over 350, mine works at 400 though I havent tried higher. I reckon I could get 425 working with a bit of a fiddle :) and better cooling!

I don't know what you told me to put me in but it bloody works =D
and its stable. One thing thou when i run CPU-Z my I will c 3.4GHz but only for 1 sec then it will become 2.2Ghz and the multiplier down to x6 and when i check My Computer properties to check the speed it only said 2.4Ghz. Was it because the EIST is enabled? what will happen if i disabled?

But in the BIOS its says 3.4Ghz always dosent changed. I tried the F4 in CPU feature and enabled the C1E support and wow my BIOS becomes blacks its wicked. Whats the setting for 3.6Ghz? =D

C1E is just speedstep, it lowers the clock and the voltage while the CPU is idle, for less heat. As soon as you run a game or an application it will go back to 3.42. You don't have to use it, though I find it a nice little feature.

Have you tried using a stress program like prime 95 to check temps and stability? I'd advise you to do that before trying to get to 3.6, as temperature is usually the limitting factor.

i havent testing switching off the EIST but i notice my AVG auto scan is running and i open Winamp to play MUSIC and CPU-Z jump to 3.4Ghz. Now i get it. If my system is idle it will run in lower speed which is less Voltage. That is simply amazing. It's like the DOT mode. really. So if i play Games like FarCry 2 or Crysis i guess it will jump to 3.4Ghz.
Thanks again man your a Genious. I neve knew there's a hidden option in CPU feature by pressing F4 i guess i didn't really read the manual well lol. But was it ok to turn off EIST? so it will run 3.4Ghz always?

Whats C1E enabled does?
