We have a Vauxhall Vectra in our family, which is on a 55 plate, meaning that we must have had it for over 3 years now.

Found out today that because its not a car that anyone ever pays any attention to, and doesnt really get driven a great deal, that its been completely overlooked, meaning that it has been getting driven with no MOT for months now.

How many people must do this? I really think that there should be a reminder sent for this kind of thing :/

They really should have something similar to a tax disc with the MOT expiry on it if you ask me, like other countries do. I only just remembered to get my MG ZS done a week or so before it was due.

Your MOT certificate has a little blue sticker you can put in the inside of your windscreen as a reminder if you want.

Talking about cars when they hit their first MOT though, 3 years is a long time to remember the date of purchase and keep track of.

Yeah I think its quite a common slip up as you say three years is a long time to remember such a thing.

Mine is due on christmas eve each year which is a nice easy one to remember :p

My car doesn't need an MOT until 2012 (about 3 1/2 years) so I have nothing to worry about when the car hits 3 years old :p

Not really, as most people will have insurance reminders etc come up around the time of year the MOT is due...
Not to mention dealerships will often send out reminders for servicing and the like (if my local Kia dealership manages it, i'm fairly certain larger ones from more premium brands will as well).

Stick a little note to yourself on the back of the tax disk holder then. Nobody outside can see it. YOu can stick the little blue thing from the MOT cert. there too.

I dont have the issue, i never forget my MOT's, my dad forgot this one though, tons of people must do it.

But there will be no MOT for the first three times that the insurance is paid, and nothing in the insurance premium differs on the fourth year to remind them. I bet there are absolutely loads of people that miss the MOT date without realising it.

Why on earth would insurance renewals be due around the same time as an MOT? I would have thought that most of the time insurance and MOT falling in the same month would be pure coincidence. My insurance for example is June and MOT late December. Most MOT's coincide with the anniversary of the cars registration if anything.
