Pedestrians who thank at crossings

I'm usually a courteous pedestrian and even though I technically have right of way and drivers have to stop for me at a crossing I'll thank them or nod and smile if I've got my hands full. However, it really annoys me when people are driving so fast they can't actually stop at the crossing. It's a 30 zone all round here and my road is wide and straight so I can see right down it and from the car you can see the crossing and who's at it from some distance. I can also see people tonking down at 50+ who are unable to stop in time for the crossing.

What makes this all the more stupid is sometimes these people actually try and pull their cars up in time and end up stopped partway over the crossing. It used to happen every now and then, usually women drivers who always stop for crossings unlike the men who just run across them, but it seems to be becoming the norm. Yesterday someone nailed it off the roundabout and saw me standing at the crossing watching all of this, hit the brakes and ended up nearly halfway over the crossing. Same happened today except it's just stopped snowing and this guy was doing way over the limit and ended up putting the car in a dive and all over the crossing.

Suffice to say I didn't thank them, just shook my head in disbelief.

I feel like pulling people like this out their cars and shaking them. Do they honestly think driving like that is acceptable?

There are drivers like this all over, its a shame :(. I understand there are some roads that you can 'make up time' however 30mph zones are definatly not. I saw somebody speeding past a junior school the other week....when school had finished an all the kids were running out to their parents :(

Idiot.

I must admit I've got straight through some crossings at 20mph becuase I haven't realised that the people loytering(sp?) are actually waiting to cross!

But if I'm on foot I always thank the drivers unless they are ******* :)

What part of fully star out swearing do you not understand?

Manners cost nowt, I Always thank people.
On the other hand if somebody is coming at the crossing quick I pretend to start crossing by sticking one of my legs out & watch them Crap themselves as they try to stop. Once they have stopped I give them the Death stare & cross without thanking :D

You don't actually have right of way, you don't have to stop at a zebra crossing unless someone has started to cross.

So I always say thankyou :)

Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.

I always give a quick wave because I genuinly am thanking them for stopping, normally unlike the 3 previous drivers who obliviously drove by.

I've also had way too many incidents of having a car stop on one side of the road and getting half way then a car on the other side sails straight through inches infront of me

Also without wanting to be sexist if the above happens or drivers just don't stop at all 95% of the time the driver is a woman.

As a pedestrian two of the times I have come closet to being hit by a car have been on zebra crossings. The first time a woman nearly ran me down and just waved and mouthed sorry as she sped past nearly crushing me. The second time some imbecile decided to overtake the car who had stopped for me on the zebra crossing, nearly mowing me down by about 10 cm.

Zebra crossings, more dangerous than crossing a blank piece of road IMO. At least you know they aren't going to stop on a normal bit of road.

I always say thanks, and if someone thanks me when I stop in my car I always give a wave. It's nice to be nice! I like to hold doors for people as well and always say thanks. Sometimes I think people are in too much of a rush. Manners cost nothing. What I do find odd sometimes, going slightly OT, is people driving like loons to get to work in a morning. Like going down bus lanes and no car roads, etc just to beat the traffic. I understand when trying to get home... but trying to get to work?! I like to take my time! lol :D

I couldn't agree more. It's like saying "Good morning / afternoon / evening" to someone. For the life of me I can't understand why good manners can annoy someone

Depressing on either journey to be honest, like able-bodied people who insist on parking in the disabled bays at supermarkets because they can save a few seconds and don't have to walk so far.
