for gaming @ 1920 x 1200
with q6600 and 4 gig of ram on an asus p5q deluxe mobo and 720w psu
what do you think will be the best

I had both cards in my posession a few weeks ago, and I kept the 4870X2. Overall smoother performance in games.

At 1920*1200 id take a GTX280, 4870X2 only really comes into it's own at 2560x1600 with silly amounts of AA, since I don't play at 2560x1600 or use silly amounts of AA a 4870X2 would be wasted, people need it remember that it uses crossfire and you will only see real benefits from the X2 at ridiculous settings, at 1920*1200 0xAA/4xAA/16xAF both cards are neck and neck most of the time

Also I would suggest geting a GTX260 216, with overclock there as fast as a GTX280 and there allot cheaper.

I'm not a fan of Crossfire and SLI, I've had bad experiences with both and have no interest in trying them again anytime soon

Now I would say GTX280 or GTX260-216 as 4870X2 is not supported in all games and Nvidia's newest drivers are giving decent FPS boosts so they are starting to pull away from ATI again. 4870X2 would be quicker overall but only if all games support it (a lot of NV TWIMTBP ones are not giving much if any extra FPS as they ignore crossfire by design methinks).

4870 is starting to fall away now at the moment I would say for single card solutions:

GTX280
GTX260-216
4870 1GB
GTX260-192 (new drivers take it beyond the 4870-512)
4870 512MB

(a lot of NV TWIMTBP ones are not giving much if any extra FPS as they ignore crossfire by design methinks).

That is not the case thank god.
If it was it would be making computer headline news Just like the Skype fiasco.

The TWIMTBP are optimized for NV cards but are not been made to break CF.
Don't confuse general driver maturity on the latest 4xxx CF line with TWIMTBP games not supporting CF.

I have the 4870X2, haven't had any real major problems with any games I've thrown at it as of yet, everything is running fast and smooth.

That review is awful, some of the results are just baffling, they've clearly mixed up some of the cards and others are just plain wrong.

It was the first one I saw using the new NV drivers with direct comparisons between the two cards. If you have some alternative numbers to show us then please post a link, giving the OP as much information as possible to make an informed buying decision is why we are posting here is it not?

Erm i have read it, i was on about the review. :p

Actually saying that, they probably did make it up. :D

To answer the OP though, X2.

I'm in line to buy either a gtx 280 or 4870x2 but i'm still undecided..

When do the next gen cards get released? If its close i may wait for them

I have owned both and the gtx 280 may report slightly slower frames in some games but the performance seams smoother. Also the x2 has lots of problems in general.

I had the same descision as you about 3 months ago, after reading all the reviews and studying several comparison charts at differant resolutions etc i went for the GTX280, if my monitor was a 24" 1920 x 1200, instead of 22" 1680x1050 i think i would have gone with the ATI X2, which showed very little drop in performance when going from 22" to 24" resolutions

Out of everything i've ever read about both these cards your post has not helped me in any way lol

I'm just as confused and indecisive as the thread starter
