No, I'm not getting confused. The absolute current 330i is 272bhp.

Ah, I see that on the website now :)

that's about 4-5hp difference by my calcs so nothing to worry about. In fact I'd be surprised if its little more than a marketing strategy for the new facelift model.

BMW seem to be constantly revising and improving their engines and relative fuel economy which ALWAYS seems to better their competitors. Big example is the 2.0 177bhp diesel, fantastic engine, nothing really comes close from any other manufacturer especially with how little fuel it sips.

hardly seems worth the effort if emissions are the same and only a marginal bhp hike was what I was referring to in this particular case

I know what you mean, but it's advancement for advancements sake, which is cool, if it was even just a remap, its not like they're claiming its a whole new engine or has immense new performance.

Yep, just comparing to the Audi 2.0tdi you have to wonder how they get away with such a pants set of figures compared to the BMW. It's a very good engine.

and the 177 PS isn't the best one - they have a 2.0 twin turbo diesel in the 1 Series (123d) with 204 PS, yet still has a combined fuel consumption figure of 54mpg!

Nope, 268bhp for MY08 and 272bhp for MY09.
I've checked SMMT data (only two outputs listed - 190kW and 200kW) and the email I received from BMW Corporate Communications on 5th July 2007 regarding MY08 changes, the 3 Series is listed as having it's power increased. No such change is present on the MY09 changes summary.

It's a case of BMW using "hp" to mean PS - I guarantee it. I deal with this every day :p
