TV Licence people...

They can't, they just have a database of adresses of who has paid and who hasn't.

They just have a database of address and send out letters hoping for some poor fool to admit they dont have one. thats why if you live in a block of flats its much harder for them to find out unless they abseil and hang out of your window to see if you have a tv.
most inportant thing dont sign anything if you do your in turd neck high.

From what Ive heard IF, massive IF, they came and knocked on your door and asked to come in, just say no. They cant come in unless you let them or they have a warrant. They wont have a warrant though and get one when refused entry, by that time you can have a license :)

This is true.

It is very, very unlikely that they will go through the labourious process of aquiring a warrent in order to see whether you have a TV, which you could quite easily not have.

We had a lady call to the door one night, advised us we didn't have one, needed to get one, gave us a wee card to pay weekly, she was terribly nice about the whole affair although this may just have been as the last license had recently expired, we hadn't got round to getting the new one sorted.

When I lived in shared accomadation a few years back we got the letters sent but never once saw anyone calling round checking. Like above posters have mentioned, in built up flats/halls it's nigh on impossible for them to single people out.

Exactly, and they send you cleverly worded letters like "we know you dont have a tv license get one asap or youll be prosecuted" They did this to us at uni in our halls and after some discussion we realised there was no way they could know if we had a tv or not. And vowed to hide it when-ever they came round, if they did..which they didnt :) Plus a mate in another flat in halls got letters even though he had a license.

If they come to search you, just stick it on the floor, cover with table cloth. Put kettle on top. Sorted.
Go you!

The police called round earlier after I stabbed someone 17,000 times in the ear. It's cool though, I hid the knife so that means I didn't commit the crime.

Because not paying a TV licence is as bad as stabbing someone in the ear

Freewire seems a cool service. Does it have BBC channels, it's interface looks nicer than Zatto which I use as my TV card is currently out of action?

In my first year at halls they sent me a letter reminding me I needed to pay my TV license ... even though I did'nt have a TV! They mass sent them out to students everywhere regardless of if they had a TV or not ...

Stop being cheap and just pay up!

Sponging bloody students...

how are students sponging? I have to pay back my loan you know?

It really annoys me when people seem to think their taxes are paying for our degree's or something.

No, I am paying for my own degree.

No, I am paying for my own degree.

That excuse isn't working. I've been to Uni, got my degree and paid the loans off.

Next!

/Edit - my taxes are paying for my parents pension. You lot are going to Uni to pay mine!

The one thing to remember though, is that if they do decide to take it as far as court, you are considered guilty unless proved otherwise.

I shocked the life out of a tv license person when I invited them in to prove that I don't own a tv. Even pointed to the wall socket, haven't heard from them since.

im not avoiding paying?

excellent.

You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, digital box, DVD or video recorder, PC, laptop or mobile phone to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV.

If you use a digital box with a hi-fi system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.
