TV Licence people...

Not fully. At all. Not by a long stretch. Which is why the whole top up fees came out.

Yes but there are different thresholds dictating how much people have to pay.. some pay the full amount..others dont. Plus, yes you can go to many universities with rubbish grades like Ds and Es but if you want to do a decent course at a red brick university..think again.

Take Manchester for instance... it gets about £43mil from home undergraduate fees... (£137 mil in total for all students) yet has an income around £700mil. Most of that will come from the government (i.e. us) in research grants etc.

Breakdown is available at the website.

No most of it comes from research/development money from large companies, and contracts.

Still don't see how that makes Students with huge loans, spongers...

How come the foreign students (like outside Eu tc) have to pay 15K when we only pay 3?

Or have i got the the umbers wrong as I'm sure they pay loads more.

"Most" doesn't at all. I just flicked through the numbers myself!

Income:

Funding Council grants 182,237,000
Tuition fees and education contracts 137,682,000
Research grants and contracts 173,606,000
Other operating income 128,209,000
Endowment and investment income 15,586,000
Total income 637,320,000

(Manchester is a good example as it has the largest total income of all UK universities)

That hugely depends on the university. Southampton has £100m in funding just from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Either way, it's not linked to 'sponging' students.

where does it say who those contracts and grants come from?

thats not all from the government.
It's all broken down and I cba tbh. My point was, students don't contribute the entire amount of their education. That was my sole comment. Same as:
I wasn't saying students are spongers... I was just contesting a comment someone made about paying for all their tuition...

That and Manchester has an overdraft that dwarfs mine by 4 orders of magnitude. LOL

And you havn't proved otherwise. If student's don't get a grant then they do pay for all their tuition. Universities do more than teach.

Of course, but the tuition doesn't pay for all the 'education' (lol) they receive. Bench fees alone for life sciences undergraduate projects can run into the thousands.
I'm pretty sure research grants are for....research, not teaching.
These are intrinsically related for any lecturer worth his salt.
