TV Licence people...

they cant detect it . ever

and as a bonus your halls manager or whoever probably wont let them in to go check round. i know mine didnt

Of course, but the tuition doesn't pay for all the 'education' (lol) they receive. Bench fees alone for life sciences undergraduate projects can run into the thousands.

but some courses cost the unis hardly anything and still cost the student 3k a year

it all evens out

What? Well the money from the Funding Council is state funds... and that makes up a large part of each university's budget..

And those grants aren't for teaching, the governement are purchasing a service - reseach for a given topic - which they then get in return. It's not a tuition subsidy.

No. If you're at a good university, tuition and research are highly related.

Research councils also heavily invest in increasing awareness of research to students and the public.

Maybe for postgraduate but not for undergraduate...
My entire 3rd year of biochemistry, molecular cell biology and medical microbiology (so 60%? of my degree) at Lancaster (not even a good university) was drawn directly from lecturers' research. Some stuff hadn't even been published.

I still think it's a bit of a tentative link between that and saying that we're not paying for all out tuition. Research in teaching is a useful by product, but to say that the purpose of research grants is for teaching material is rather far fetched.

Yes but that is still your lecturers research, not students.

I didn't say that. I was saying that students profit from research (irrelevant of how it's funded).

... obviously. But tuition fees didn't 'pay' for it.

Is'nt that the whole point of University? The University gets paid to do research from companies / the state then the tuition fees are used to pay the lecturer to teach us it..

You'll find most 3rd year science students will carry out their own research at university as well as benefiting from the research the lecturers/professors are currently carrying out.

That reminds me i need to cancel my crappy tv license. Stoped watching tv infact i dont have anymore time watching it these days too busy working 7 days a week. Ringing them up first thing in the morning and getting it cancelled. They can shove the license down their ***. Sick and tired paying something i dont like.

Na iv had my License for about 5-6 years now, but been workin 7 days a week for almost 3 years. And lately dont give a flying monkey about watching tv etc. So might aswell cancell it for a while or when ever i do decide to get it back.

The only people who are prosecuted for not not paying the TV tax are the ones dumb enough to let the salesman in so he can get his proof. :o

Agreed. I haven't paid my license for years. If the TV guy comes round your house just don't let him into your flat. And tell him if he doesn't like it to come back with the police and a warrant. Don't sign any papers he gives you either or you could incriminate yourself.

Regarding the technology, I know a someone who worked as a TV license inspecter and he said the whole van with recievers is a load of rubbish and the vans are empty. People just see the van and are more likely to sign a confession of guilt on there doorstep.

I think one of the forum members worked for the TV licensing people confirmed this. I'll see if I can dig it up.
