Survivors

I don't think it would be fun. It would be a cluster **** with people killing each other, dying of simple diseases that are usually easy to solve; pain and death all around you.

There would be fun parts such as repopulation etc., but forget relaxing in front of the internet for hours. It would set the human race back centuries and the societal system would become fuedal / tribal. The most important skills would change from - who has professional skills, to who can grow things and defend themselves and their family.

Not my cup of tea although would make an interesting scenario for a game or series as we saw last night.

I think that the priorities are:

Water, Food, Shelter and security.

Water and Food would become an issue after about 12 months when the supply of tinned/jarred food/water starts to run out.

Shelter is easy - loads of empty houses. Personally I would find somewhere with borehole/artesian water and some land. These places tend to be a bit isolated so so much the better as you are away from towns/cities with all the dead bodies.

Once things have 'calmed down' a bit, the chavs have mostly killed each other I would head off to a better climate for self sufficiency - Mid France/Dordogne that sort of thing. You get more sun (solar power) and better/easier crop yields.

I would also make sure that I had livestock sheep, pigs and chickens all fairly low maintenance and not too hard to find food for - plus you get eggs and milk.

Hopefully we could start to get a community together with the necessary people, a doctor, dentist, (I grew up farming), and yes self defence would be important as people would elect to scavange rather than grow.

In all honesty I think that I would be fitter, healthier and far less lazy than I am now !

Re: the tv show last night, did anyone else wonder why people where dying all over the place such as houses and local roads but the motorways were completely empty?

Probably cos when you feel ill you go home or to hospital. If the time gap between feeling rough and dying is more than 90 minutes then almost everybody would have been able to get home before dying.

I think the weirdest thing would be the dead bodies, literally everywhere. Cars, houses, trains, shops, anywhere. Assuming the virus just makes you collapse and die or something.

Re: the tv show last night, did anyone else wonder why people where dying all over the place such as houses and local roads but the motorways were completely empty?

Oh the writers took a number of liberties. Like:-
- The majority of the UK seemed to die on one night? Hmmm... People would have caught it over a couple of weeks, so you have people weeks apart with the condition.
- In the original series the survivors suffered from the virus, but 'survived' it. In the new one, some suffered, some didn't seem to catch it at all?
- Not a single survivors seemed bothered about relatives?

It took a good few episodes of the original series for the characters to meet up, but by the end of the first episode of the new series we already have our group.

The next episode looks like a direct remake of one of the originals, so will be interesting to see what it's like.

Eh? Have you ever been on the M1, M6 or M25 at 3am in the morning? Its not exactly deserted.

Yes, and I've frequently driven for stretches as long as they showed and not seen another car. I'm not saying it's perfect and nor should we really expect such a programme to be totally accurate to what might happen in that scenario, but I think empty motorways were the least of its failings.

I saw Episode 1 last night and have to say I really liked it, I've not been a fan of serious/drama British TV shows much (Apart from Dr Who etc) but this was done really well, even the explosion of the petrol station looked good!

Looking forward to Ep2 on Tuesday!

i would do what the black guy did and load a land rover and trailer with supplies then head for the hills, wait for the rest of the people to stop killing each other then go back :D

...and just two cars being driven around by Survivors in probably 10 square miles, and guess what, they nearly hit each other!
