Got up for work this morning and my focus has decided all of a sudden its not going to start.

Starter motor sounds fine and if i give it some gas when holding my key in the ignition position it start and sounds ok just as soon as i let go of the accelerator it just dies.... ideas please before i have to pay some garage £100 for something that prob only £10-£20?

Mine did this, cranking but didnt start. I used my other car, then the next day the car started after a bit of a splutter.

I concluded that it was probably a wet crank sensor connection that had dried out a day later. What engine is it?

I think the imobiliser on the Focus Mk1/2 (you haven't said which Focus you have?) just cuts the fuel pump off a couple of seconds after starting so possibly a fault with that, perhaps try a different key as a first port of call.

Have you/Can you run it to normal temp holding the throttle(keeping it running) incase Damp is the problem very high humidity count in the mornings latley

Damp in a wasted spark ignition system is rare. Cam sensor only really sorts fuelling from batch to sequential, if there is an issue there you may notice a stutter or a failsafe will avoid any real issues so thats unlikely to prevent it starting.

A weak ignition pack could be a port of call, failing that when were the spark plugs checked? IACV will give it the extra air it needs for a cold start, so with you saying you need to give it more gas you are compensating for the fact that may not be opening fully. Check its not gummed up.

2l Mk1,

If i keep the revs up it will keep going, its as soon i let the revs drop it just dies.....dont even try and idle.

Do me a quick favour and try it with the heater control set to feet rather than windscreen and the AC turned off. I know it sounds weird.....

Well i went home at around 9:45 to try it again and still no joy.

Just been home to try it now and it started first time :S

I left my foot on the throttle for about 30 seconds keeping it at about 3,000 RPM and it still just dropped and....quite :)

Probably same issue mine had. I guess theres no check engine light on the dash but I wonder if the ECU still stores faults assuming it recognised the non start conditions as one with a dicky sensor reading somewhere.

Did you fuel up before switching it off last night or when you last drove it by any chance you know were am going with this dont you, just maybe you, I mean the missus :p has put Diesel in,just a thought it does happen all the time

Yer i did fuel up yesterday in fact but it was me and 100% sure it was petrol lol :P

No all the dashboard lights go out. A mobile mechanic is coming to cast his eye over it tonight, its due for a service in jan so i will bring that forward.

Had this a couple of weeks ago, got half off the driveway when it died on me. Pushed it off the road, tried it again wasn't having it. Rang the AA out, said he's seen a fair few. Started up fine for him with a good bit of welly, chucked a load of petrol out the back end and was fine after leaving it to run for 10 minutes.

He said if it does it again, lock it twice (so the deadlocks come on, apparently it resets the ECU), unlock and try again.
