A question of ethics regarding piracy ?

End of the day it doesn't matter what we think, it matters what law firms like Davenport think if they pick up someones IP from a torrent.

What they think: sue

Regardless of the legal stuff. I think the OP is asking what you as individuals think about it from an ethical stand point.

I don't really care what the law says. If publishers are to be believed, we're paying for the experience, not the physical goods.

By that logic, if I buy the game on the 360, I'm perfectly entitled to download a PC version. It's the same game, the same experience. And the publisher is still getting my money for the experience.

I have done so in the past, and will do so again. I've bought games on the 360 and downloaded on the PC. Especially games like GTA IV which I'd rather play on the PC but I don't want to wait 8 months for (Although this one I may actually purchase for the PC too!).

dont really care as long as they stay quiet about it.....

but they never do...they come on the forum and say stuff like "completed X its rubbish" blah blah Like 2 weeks before the game is released anywhere.

Thats the only thing which annoys me - by all means pirate away - just dont gloat!

My post was my point of view.

I don't buy a film as cheap as I can on DVD and expect to get a copy of the Blu-Ray version.

Which is still theft, so congratulations :).

They could argue that the experience is different because of the way it is played (keyboard and mouse option rather than gamepad).

I used to get games illegally but now I just buy the games, I don't see the point any more. I'd rather buy a game and know I've got support from the company should I need it and my game is legit so won't be banned or anything. :)

Been several cases of trying to prosecute people for torrenting thrown out of court recently. It's easy to say that someone has hacked your wifi as an excuse or even that it's well known torrent sites throw random IP's into the mix to put off investigation.

On the OP's topic though - it's a difficult one to call as the game developers are really keen to try and stop the second hand games market because they say you are buying the experience and not the product to by that rational you would imagine that it doesn't matter what platform you 'experience' it on as long as you have paid for a copy... can't see developers thinking the same way though!

Fable console

Fable pc

same experience?

all they need to do is call it "special edition" limited editon etc...add on a little bit of extra content and bam - you got a whole new experience :)

People are always going to get a game for 'free' if they can.

It is illegal, but when you can get a game off a mate for nothing up to 6 months before it is out here, why on EARTH would you pay for a legit one??

Not saying piracy is fine or even acceptable, but when you have the option of:
1. Free
2. Wait 1-2months and pay up to £50 - Often release games go out of stock too.

It is obvious which one many people go for.
I don't get why some people whine on about piracy. EVERYONE has a copied game, or OS or film or mp3.

seems people have views on piracy depending on what it is that being copied.

I bet a month’s wages there are people on here that moan their heads off about 360 piracy yet have countless gb of albums sat on their hard drive, not to mention thousands of pounds of Apps such as Photoshop etc.

Piracy is Piracy its as simple as that, do it, or don’t. but it just bugs me when hypocrites start about a single type of piracy

rant over :)

Exactly my point. 99.9% of people with a pc (asin everyone but grannies) have something not-paid-for on there.

I already have a TV at home, so it's ok for me to go and steal another :)

Yeah cos thats the same thing....

Anyway, yeah Id say it still is - but there is no way Id pay for the same game twice unless I really liked it and wanted to support the manufacturer or whatever
